DOWN THE JEFFERIES TUBE
Star Trek: Voyager fan fiction from below decks  ·  by Russ Tamayo

1.0  INTRODUCTION

My name is Russ Tamayo. I'm 38, and I live in San Diego, where I work as the chief engineer for a radio station, which means I'm the guy who climbs the tower at two in the morning when the transmitter goes down. Before that I spent eight years in the Navy, four of them as a sonar technician on a fast-attack submarine. So I know a little about living in a tin can a long way from home with a crew you didn't pick, and that's why Voyager got its hooks in me from the pilot on.

Everybody writes about the captain and the bridge. I love those folks too, but I write mostly about the other hundred-and-some people on that ship: the ones on the graveyard shift in Engineering, the ones pulling isolinear chips in the Jefferies tubes, the ones who were Maquis when this trip started and are wearing a Starfleet uniform now and still aren't sure how they feel about it. The officers show up. They just aren't always the ones telling the story.

2.0  DISCLAIMER

Star Trek: Voyager and all its characters, ships and settings are the property of Paramount Pictures. I'm borrowing them for fun, with respect, and for no money. Original characters (Crewman Ferrante, Ensign Lomax and the others) are mine. Please don't repost these anywhere without asking.

3.0  STORIES

Title Details
Third Watch
New
Complete. About 2,000 words. Rated PG.
A coolant alarm at 0300, an ex-Maquis crewman who hates tight spaces, and Lt. Torres, who doesn't care. With a cameo from somebody who can't sleep either.
Spoilers: none to speak of. Set in Season 5.
Long Range
Chapter 1
Work in progress. Rated PG.
Ensign Paris and Ensign Kim take the Delta Flyer out on a two-week survey that is supposed to be boring.
Spoilers: through Season 5. Chapter 2 is about half done.

4.0  STATUS REPORT

24 SEP 99. Well. Wednesday night's season premiere was worth the whole summer of waiting, and I'm not saying one word more about it here, because my brother-in-law in Phoenix tapes it and doesn't watch until the weekend, and he knows where I live. Season 6 is on the air. All is right with the universe.

12 SEP 99. Posted "Third Watch." Thanks to Deb for the beta read and for pointing out that I'd put a warp core breach alarm in a scene where nothing was breaching. Old habits. On a sub every alarm sounds like the end of the world.

29 AUG 99. Long Range, Chapter 1 went up. Chapter 2 is fighting me.

5.0  FEEDBACK

Tell me what worked and what didn't. Tell me if I got something technical wrong; I'd honestly rather know. I answer every e-mail, usually within a week, sooner if the transmitter behaves.
