The Companions all twenty-five, rated in hamsters The Common Room · The Companions · Chapter Notes · Tales of the Sword Coast |
Ratings are out of five hamsters, in honor of Boo, and they're mine and nobody else's. Andrew says I'm too hard on the evil ones. Andrew plays a paladin every single time, so Andrew doesn't get a vote. A rating is about how much I liked having them along: how useful they are, how fun they are to listen to, and how much trouble they cause. "Where" tells you where I've found them. Some of them only show up after a certain point in the story, so if somebody isn't there yet, keep playing. |
| Imoen Human thief, Neutral Good |
Where: Right outside Candlekeep, the morning after Gorion dies. She finds you, so you can't miss her. My rating: Your childhood friend from Candlekeep, cheerful no matter what, and the only thief you get before you've walked a mile. She's in every party I've ever had except the evil one, and I missed her the whole time. Give her a bow. |
| Jaheira Half-elf fighter/druid, True Neutral |
Where: The Friendly Arm Inn, with Khalid. Gorion told you to meet them there. My rating: Bossy, bossy, bossy. Also tough as nails, a healer and a fighter in one, and the person you'd want next to you in a dark cave. She bosses Khalid around something awful. She's also crazy about him, which is sweet. |
| Khalid Half-elf fighter, Neutral Good |
Where: The Friendly Arm Inn, with Jaheira. My rating: A good fighter and the nicest man on the Sword Coast. He's nervous and stammers, and he's sweet, and I want to give him a hug. He's not much more than a solid sword arm, but you need one of those. |
| Minsc Human ranger, Neutral Good |
Where: Nashkel. He'll ask you to help rescue Dynaheir from the gnolls. My rating: MINSC. And Boo, his hamster, who Minsc swears is a giant space hamster, only a very small one. Minsc is huge, loud, not very bright, and the bravest person in the game. He talks to Boo. Boo is very wise. If you don't laugh at Minsc at least once an hour, check your speakers. |
| Dynaheir Human invoker (mage), Lawful Good |
Where: The Gnoll Stronghold, a prisoner. Go get her with Minsc. My rating: A good mage with a lot of dignity and not many hit points. Keep her in the back. If you lose her, Minsc takes it very, very hard, so don't. |
| Xzar Human necromancer, Chaotic Evil |
Where: He and Montaron find you on the road early on and want you to look into the Nashkel mines. My rating: Completely crazy, and not in a fun way. He says creepy things at random. A decent mage on paper. Not worth it, and see the Harpers thing on the front page. |
| Montaron Halfling fighter/thief, Neutral Evil |
Where: With Xzar. My rating: Grumpy little guy who can fight and pick locks. He and Xzar bicker constantly. He's better than Xzar, which isn't saying much. |
| Kivan Elf ranger, Chaotic Good |
Where: He's hunting the bandit leader Tazok for a very sad reason, and you'll run into him out in the wilds early on. My rating: Quiet, sad, and the best archer I've had. He barely talks, and when he does, it breaks your heart. Ask him about his wife. Actually, don't, unless you have tissues. |
| Viconia Drow cleric, Neutral Evil |
Where: Out in the wilds with a Flaming Fist soldier chasing her. Help her and she'll join. My rating: A dark elf who ran away from the Underdark and doesn't trust anybody, and a very good cleric. Sharp tongue, very funny if you like that. She hates a good reputation, so she doesn't fit a nice party. |
| Edwin Human conjurer, Lawful Evil |
Where: Near Nashkel. He'll want you to kill Dynaheir. My rating: A Red Wizard of Thay who thinks everyone else is an idiot, and mutters about it. The strongest mage you can get, and the funniest evil character in the game. In my evil party he did half the work and complained about the other half. |
| Kagain Dwarf fighter, Lawful Evil |
Where: His shop in Beregost. He wants help with a caravan. My rating: A greedy, cranky dwarf with a ton of hit points. Great at standing in front and taking a beating. He only cares about money. Not a fun guy to travel with, but he will not fall down. |
| Coran Elf fighter/thief, Chaotic Good |
Where: The Cloakwood. He wants help with some wyverns. My rating: A charming elf archer who flirts with everything that moves. Great with a bow, and he can find traps too. A little bit of a cad, but a lovable one. |
| Ajantis Human paladin, Lawful Good |
Where: Out in the wilds. I always seem to meet him in the middle of a fight with something. My rating: A paladin of the Order of the Radiant Heart. Brave, honest, and a little preachy. He's not going to put up with evil characters in your party. Good in a good party, a problem in any other kind. |
| Branwen Human cleric of Tempus, True Neutral |
Where: The Nashkel Carnival, turned to stone. You'll need a Stone to Flesh scroll to get her out. My rating: A big Norse warrior priestess who wants revenge on the man who turned her to stone. She fights better than most clerics and heals too. I love her. Free her the first chance you get. |
| Yeslick Dwarf fighter/cleric, Lawful Good |
Where: The Cloakwood Mines, a prisoner. My rating: A kind old dwarf who knows the mines better than the people who took them from his clan. Solid fighter and healer both. Shows up late in the game, so he's a little behind everybody in experience. |
| Garrick Human bard, Chaotic Neutral |
Where: Beregost. My rating: A traveling bard who's sweet and a little lovesick. His song helps the party a bit. He's weak in a fight, though, and I always end up leaving him somewhere safe. |
| Safana Human thief, Chaotic Neutral |
Where: Out by the lighthouse on the coast, with a little treasure-hunting job for you. My rating: Beautiful, and she'll tell you so. A fine thief, but Imoen does the same job and doesn't need flattering. |
| Tiax Gnome cleric/thief, Chaotic Evil |
Where: The city of Baldur's Gate. My rating: A tiny gnome who is absolutely certain he's going to rule the world someday and tells you so constantly. Totally insane, and the funniest thing in the game after Minsc. Not very useful. I don't care. |
| Quayle Gnome cleric/illusionist, Chaotic Neutral |
Where: I've only ever picked him up once, in my weirdo game, and I honestly couldn't tell you where again. He finds you. My rating: A know-it-all gnome who thinks he's smarter than everybody, and he can heal and cast mage spells both. Too fragile to keep alive, and too annoying to miss. |
| Alora Halfling thief, Chaotic Good |
Where: The Hall of Wonders in Baldur's Gate, at night. My rating: Bubbly, happy, sees the bright side of everything. Very lucky, which is actually useful. If you need a cheerful thief and Imoen's busy, she's great. |
| Eldoth Human bard, Neutral Evil |
Where: The Cloakwood. He has a plan involving Skie. My rating: A sleazy bard with a nasty plan for a duke's daughter. Every scene with him made me want to take a shower. One hamster, and only because zero looked rude. |
| Faldorn Human druid, True Neutral |
Where: The Cloakwood. My rating: A druid who hates cities and everybody who lives in them. Good spells, bad attitude. Jaheira's better in every way. |
| Shar-Teel Human fighter, Chaotic Evil |
Where: She'll pick a fight with you out in the wilds. Beat her and she joins. My rating: Tough as leather and mean as a snake, and she does not like men, at all. Good fighter. Bad company. |
| Skie Human thief, Chaotic Neutral |
Where: Baldur's Gate, at her father's estate, in Chapter 5. (Or Eldoth brings her, which I don't recommend.) My rating: A spoiled rich girl who ran off for adventure and complains about everything once she gets it. Weakest companion in the game. Sorry, Skie. |
| Xan Elf enchanter, Lawful Neutral |
Where: The Nashkel Mines, a prisoner. My rating: A gloomy elf with a magic moonblade who is sure everything is hopeless and everybody is doomed. I find him hilarious. He's actually a good mage, too, if you can take the sighing. |
