THE EPISODE FILE
Shipper favorites, seasons one through six. This is not a complete guide, just the hours I'd
play for anyone who doubts. Each one gets a Yell-O-Meter rating: how loudly I talked to the
TV, from 1 (a small sigh) to 5 (the neighbors asked).
WARNING: spoilers through the end of season six.
SEASON ONE (1993-94)
Ice
Trapped in Alaska, they check each other's necks and decide to trust each other anyway. This is
where it started for me. Yell-O-Meter: 2 |
Beyond the Sea
Scully's worst week, and the first time you see how much Mulder worries about her. Yell-O-Meter: 2 |
SEASON TWO (1994-95)
One Breath
Scully comes back, barely, and Mulder won't leave her side. I don't think I blinked for the last ten minutes. Yell-O-Meter: 4 |
Irresistible
Frightening all the way through, and then the ending, when she finally lets herself fall apart and he's right there. Yell-O-Meter: 3 |
SEASON THREE (1995-96)
Quagmire
Two partners stuck on a rock in the dark, talking about Moby Dick and her father. Nothing happens. Everything happens. Yell-O-Meter: 3 |
SEASON FOUR (1996-97)
Memento Mori
Scully tells him about the cancer. I had to stop the tape and go for a walk around the block. Yell-O-Meter: 2 (too sad to yell) |
Small Potatoes
The closest they had ever come, and it wasn't even him. Then the real one walks in. I laughed until I cried. Yell-O-Meter: 5 |
SEASON FIVE (1997-98)
Detour
Lost in the Florida woods overnight, and she sings to him. Not well. It's perfect. Yell-O-Meter: 3 |
The Post-Modern Prometheus
Filmed in black and white, strange and sweet, and it ends with the two of them dancing. DANCING. Yell-O-Meter: 5 |
And then, in June 1998, the movie. The bee. See the front page. I have nothing more to say about the bee.
SEASON SIX (1998-99)
Triangle
Mulder on an ocean liner in 1939, with every face he knows living a different life. That kiss. Then the last thirty seconds. I had to sit down, and I was already sitting down. Yell-O-Meter: 5 |
How the Ghosts Stole Christmas
A haunted house on Christmas Eve, and at the end, presents on the couch. The coziest hour this show has ever made. Yell-O-Meter: 3 |
The Unnatural
A baseball story David Duchovny wrote and directed, and the batting lesson at the end made me melt. Yell-O-Meter: 4 |
Arcadia
Undercover as a married couple in a spooky planned neighborhood, under the names Rob and Laura Petrie. I rest my case. Yell-O-Meter: 4 |
Biogenesis
The cliffhanger. I'm not over it and won't be until November. Yell-O-Meter: 4 |
