The Late Knights
an online chess club for grown-ups who play after the kids are in bed
Thursday nights on FICS since 1997

Home Games Puzzles Ladder

Who we are
The Late Knights started in the fall of 1997, when four of us kept ending up across the board from each other on the Free Internet Chess Server at eleven o'clock at night. After a few months of rematches somebody said we might as well make it official. Now there are twelve of us, in seven states, Ontario and one gentleman in Scotland who gets up very early on Friday mornings to play.

We are not masters. Our strongest player is a strong club player and our newest member learned how the knight moves in April. What we have in common is that we all love the game and none of us can get to a real chess club on a weeknight.

When and how we play

Club nightThursdays, 9:00 PM Eastern, on FICS. Casual games, blitz, whatever you like.
Round robinMonthly, in groups of four, 45 minutes plus 15 seconds a move. Play your three games any night that month.
ResultsE-mail me the score of the game (or save it and attach it) and I'll update the ladder.
DuesNone. Bring good sportsmanship.

Club news

Thursday, September 23, 1999. September round robin is nearly done. Ptarmigan got revenge on Brannock for the August game (see the Games page, if you want to see what the revenge was for). NewGuyNed won his first rated club game this week, against me, and I could not be prouder even though it cost me eleven ladder points. New puzzles are up.

Sunday, September 12, 1999. Several of us have been voting every day in the Kasparov versus the World game on MSN. It's been a wonderful thing to watch. The World team is holding its own far longer than anybody predicted, and the analysis on the bulletin boards is better than most books I own. OldTom says it has done more for his endgame than thirty years of reading. Whatever happens, it's been worth it.

Monday, August 30, 1999. Congratulations to Alexander Khalifman, who won the FIDE knockout championship in Las Vegas. Sicilian_Sue called it in the first week, and would like that recorded.

Saturday, August 7, 1999. We've switched club night from Wednesday to Thursday so that Fianchetto can make it after choir practice.

The Club Ladder
These are our own club ratings, not our FICS ratings. I keep them by hand with the Elo formula and a calculator, starting everyone at 1500 and counting only club round robin games. As of September 23.

(P) = provisional, fewer than twenty games. Glenlivet is our man in Scotland. Yes, that's his real favorite.

Want to join?
Any adult of any strength is welcome. Write to me, the club secretary, with your FICS handle and a sentence or two about yourself. Come to a Thursday night or two first, and if you like us, we'll put you in the next round robin. All I ask is that you finish the games you start and that you say "good game" whether it was or not.
