Pinecrest Ladies'
Nine-Hole League

Tuesday mornings at Pinecrest Golf Course · Est. 1987

Welcome, ladies (and any husbands who have been sent to look up the schedule)!

I'm Marge, and I've been the league secretary since 1995, which means I keep the standings, mail the newsletter, and call around when it rains. My daughter-in-law set this page up for me over the summer so that I could stop calling around when it rains. We'll see how that goes. If something on here is wrong, that's my fault, not hers.

The Pinecrest Ladies' Nine-Hole League is a friendly Tuesday-morning league for women of all abilities. And I do mean all: we have a former club champion and we have ladies who took up the game after they retired, and we have had a wonderful time together for twelve seasons now. You do not need a handicap to join. You do not need to be good. You need to be at the first tee by 8:15 with a smile and a sleeve of balls.

League News New!

September 22: Well, that's the season! Thank you to everyone who came to the luncheon yesterday. We had 15 of our 16 regulars (Dot was at her granddaughter's christening in Charleston and was very much missed). Congratulations to Peggy and Carolyn, our 1999 champions, who finished three points clear after that rain-out in August cost Barbara and Ruth a chance to catch them. The final standings are posted below. The trophy (it's the same trophy, we just add a plate) goes to Peggy's house until next May.

September 8: The pro shop has asked me to remind everyone that carts must stay on the path on holes 3 and 7 until the new sod has taken. I know. I know. Please just do it.

August 24: Rained out. First one all season, which for South Carolina in August is a small miracle. No make-up date since we're so close to the end; the points for that week are simply not counted.

August 3: Welcome to our two newest members, Loretta and Jean, who are playing as a team for the rest of the season on a substitute basis and will be full members next year. Jean sank a 30-footer on 9 in her first week and we are all a little suspicious of her.

Final 1999 Standings
Points: 2 for a match won, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss, played as two-woman better-ball with full handicaps. Eighteen weeks scheduled, seventeen played.

Loretta and Jean joined in August and played the last seven weeks, so don't let their record fool you. Alice and Gloria would like it noted that they had the most fun. I believe them.

Schedule

When: Every Tuesday, May through September. First tee time is 8:30 a.m. sharp; please be at the tee by 8:15 so we can pair up and go. We play in threesomes and foursomes off the first tee, front nine only. (The pro shop kindly holds the first four times for us; if you're late, you're behind the men's seniors' league and I can't help you.)

Where: Pinecrest Golf Course, the public course out past the high school. Red tees.

Cost: League dues are $20 for the season, which covers the newsletter, the trophy plate, the weekly prizes and the luncheon. Greens fees are paid to the pro shop each week at the league rate.

1999 season: May 4 through September 14, with the luncheon September 21. Seventeen weeks played, one rain-out (August 24).

2000 season: We plan to start Tuesday, May 2, 2000, and finish September 12, with the luncheon on the 19th. Mark your calendars. I'll confirm in the spring newsletter.

The End-of-Season Luncheon

Tuesday, September 21, 1999, in the back room at the clubhouse after our final nine holes (a scramble, just for fun). Chicken salad, the good rolls, and Fran's lemon squares, which she has finally agreed to share the recipe for, and which I will put on this page as soon as she actually writes it down.

Prizes went to: Peggy and Carolyn (champions), Barbara and Ruth (runners-up), Sue (most improved, she took eight strokes off her handicap this year), Ellen (closest to the pin on 4 in the scramble), and Gloria, who won the "most balls in the pond on 6" award, which comes with a sleeve of balls and a lot of teasing. We also passed the hat for Dot's granddaughter and sent a card.

Thank you to the clubhouse staff for putting up with us all season.

League Rules
Revised May 1999. We keep these short on purpose.

1. Maximum score. The most you can take on any hole is double par (6 on a par 3, 8 on a par 4, 10 on a par 5). When you reach it, pick up, write it down, and move along. Nobody is embarrassed and nobody waits.

2. Ready golf. If you are ready and it is safe, hit. We don't stand on honors. This alone knocks twenty minutes off a round.

3. Play it as it lies in the fairway. In the rough you may roll it over with your clubhead one time, because the rough at Pinecrest is what it is.

4. Lost ball or out of bounds: drop at the point where it went out, one stroke penalty, and go. Don't walk back to the tee. (Yes, I know this isn't the official rule. It's ours.)

5. Handicaps are league handicaps figured by me from your last ten nine-hole scores. New members play their first three weeks without one and then get one. If you think yours is wrong, tell me nicely.

6. Substitutes are welcome as long as they are women and you let me know by Monday night.

7. Be kind. Rake the bunkers, fix your ball marks, and compliment a good shot even when it's against you. That's the whole point of Tuesday morning.

Signing Up for the 2000 Season

We'll have room for two, possibly three, new teams next spring. If you would like to join us, or if you are a single player looking for a partner (I keep a list and I'm a pretty good matchmaker), please e-mail me at [email protected] with your name and roughly how often you play. There's no tryout. Dues will stay at $20.

Returning members: I'll send the sign-up sheet in the March newsletter as always. If you've moved, send me your new address so the newsletter doesn't go to your old house again, Nancy.

You are visitor number 012837 since June 1999. (That can't be right. There are only 16 of us.)
