¡Abuela Esperanza los saluda! Abuela Esperanza Says Hello! Bienvenidos / Welcome ¡Pásenle, pásenle! Yo soy Esperanza Rios. Come in, come in! I am Esperanza Rios. I am seventy years old and I live in El Paso, Texas. My granddaughter Marisol made me this page on the computer and I told her what to write. Sit down. Did you eat yet? [Marisol here: She really does ask everybody this. The mailman. People on the phone. Now the whole Internet.] I was born on a little ranch near Parral, Chihuahua, so small it is not on the maps. We had an adobe house, three goats and a quince tree. My mother made flour tortillas on the comal every morning before the sun came up. My father always told us how Pancho Villa was killed in Parral, like he had been there himself. Maybe he was. He never said. I crossed the bridge in 1949, twenty years old, with one suitcase and my aunt's address. I worked thirty-one years in a sewing factory. I married Tomás, may he rest in peace, and we raised four children in the Segundo Barrio. Now I live in the Lower Valley in a little house with a big yard. Every night I see the star on the mountain and I thank God. [Marisol: The star is on the Franklin Mountains. It was already there when she came. She still says goodnight to it.] I have nine grandchildren, thank God: Marisol, Daniel, Verónica, Luis, Ana, Rubén, Cristina, Joey, and little Gabriel, who is only one. I love them all the same. None of them calls me enough. [Marisol: I call her every day. I am typing this in her kitchen right now. She says every day is not enough.]
In my garden I have green chile, tomatoes, squash, mint, a peach tree and my roses. The roses are Tomás's; he planted them and I take care of them. If you come to visit, do not step on my squash. I already told you. [Marisol: She did tell us. Many times. Daniel stepped on one in 1994 and we are still hearing about it.] Nadie come nunca. I watch my novela every night, and do not talk to me during the novela. My opinions: the rich boy's mother always hates the poor girl. The bad woman always has a beauty mark and very tall hair. Nobody ever eats. I have watched Thalía marry a rich boy at least three times, and every time I cry. And Paola Bracho in "La Usurpadora"... what a woman! If my sister did that to me, she would have to answer to me. [Marisol: "Nobody ever eats" is her biggest complaint. She tells the TV, "¡Denle de comer a esa muchacha!" Somebody feed that girl!] May God bless everyone who comes to my page. ![]() Escríbame / Write to me: [email protected] [Marisol: I read them to her and she answers every one. Slowly. With instructions.] Visitantes / Visitors: Actualizada el 16 de septiembre de 1999 / Last updated September 16, 1999 © 1999 Esperanza Rios Regresar a Baja / Back to Baja |
