Welcome to my little corner of the Web. Like every page out here, it's under construction.

17 days until graduation!

Averill College commencement is Sunday, May 19, 1996, at 10 a.m. on the Green (in the gym if it rains, which it will). Four years went by in about a week and a half.

About me

I'm a senior English major with a minor in history, class of '96. I'm from Pittsburgh, and yes, I will talk to you about the Steelers, even now. For the past four years I've worked twelve hours a week at the circulation desk of Hale Library, which means I have checked out, checked in, reshelved or chased down roughly every book in the building. If you ever had a fine at Hale, it's possible I'm the one who told you about it. Sorry.

My senior thesis, Plowed Under: Land and Memory in Willa Cather's Prairie Novels, is finally turned in (April 22, 85 pages, two all-nighters, one near-death experience with a corrupted floppy). It's mostly about O Pioneers! and My Ántonia and how the land in those books keeps outlasting the people who work it. Thank you to Professor Lindqvist for reading three drafts and never once sighing out loud.

Things I will miss

• The third floor of Hale at 11 p.m., when it's just me and the radiator and the bound periodicals
• Sunday night closing shifts with the whole building to myself
• Friends on Thursday nights in the lounge with forty people yelling at the TV
• The X-Files on Friday nights, same lounge, fewer people, more yelling
• Getting paid to be around books
• The guys on the fourth floor of Marsh Hall

Things I will not miss

• Dining hall Tuesday "stir fry"
• Waiting forty minutes for a computer in the lab at midterms
• The 8 a.m. Chaucer seminar (sorry, Chaucer)
• Parking

In my CD player

• Fugees, The Score
• Oasis, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
• Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (still working through disc two)
• Dave Matthews Band, Crash (bought it Tuesday, the day it came out)

On my nightstand

Infinite Jest. I'm on page 200. That leaves roughly eight hundred more, plus the endnotes. I figure I'll finish it sometime around the next graduation.

After May 19

I'm moving back to Pittsburgh in June and looking for work in book publishing, editing, or a library. If you know of anything, please let me know! My resume is here.

Important: my college e-mail account shuts off June 30. After that, the best way to reach me is my GeoCities address below. I'll keep checking it, I promise.
