HELLO BAND FAMILIES!

Welcome to the Boosters page! I'm Teresa Dominguez, Boosters communications chair, mom of a junior clarinet and a freshman in the guard, and the person who sends the Sunday night phone-tree calls you've all been getting. This page is here so you can check dates without digging the orange sheet out from under the magnets on your fridge. I'll update it every Sunday night during the season. If something here disagrees with what Mr. Hollingsworth says, Mr. Hollingsworth wins.

For privacy, students are listed on this page by first name only.

THE 1999 SHOW: "THE PLANETS"

This year's field show is built on Gustav Holst's The Planets, in three parts:

Opener: Mars. Loud, pounding, and the drumline's favorite eight minutes of the year. Okay, closer to three.
Ballad: Venus. The guard switches to the silver flags and the whole field goes quiet. Watch for the mellophone solo, played beautifully by Andrea (senior).
Closer: Jupiter. The big finish, with the company front that has made at least three grandmothers cry this season.

Drum majors: Lauren and DeShawn. Guard captain: Brianna. Section leaders are listed on the bulletin board in the band room.

COMPETITION RESULTS

  • Sat., Sept. 18, Twin Creeks Invitational: 2nd place in our class, Best Percussion. The drumline would like everyone to know that. Several times.
  • Sat., Sept. 25, Tri-County Marching Classic: 1st PLACE in our class and BEST COLOR GUARD!!! The guard girls (and our two guard guys!) screamed so loud on the bus that the driver pulled over to make sure everyone was OK. Everyone was very, very OK.

VALLEY INVITATIONAL: WE NEED YOU!
Hosting a competition takes about 80 adults working in shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. It pays for a big chunk of our year: judges' fees for our own contests, bus fuel, sheet music, props, and repairs to instruments the school can't afford to fix. Jobs we still need filled, as of tonight:

  • Concessions: 18 more people, any shift. You'll never sell so many hot dogs in your life.
  • Gate and tickets: 6 more
  • Band hosts (walk a visiting band from the buses to warm-up to the field and back): 5 more
  • Parking: 4 more, preferably people who own a reflective vest and a loud voice
  • Clean-up crew after the last band: as many as possible. Many hands, early bedtime.

E-mail me or grab me at the Friday game. You don't need experience. You need comfortable shoes.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

  • Pit crew: help roll the front ensemble's marimbas, timpani and props on and off the field. Dads, moms, grandpas, uncles, all welcome. Wear black.
  • Uniform crew: hemming, buttons, and the endless search for the missing plume.
  • Chaperones for the buses. You get to ride with the band. That's the prize and the penalty.
  • Water crew: fill the coolers before rehearsals and competitions. It's still hot out there some afternoons.

FRUIT SALE
Florida navel oranges, pink grapefruit, and the mixed box. Every student has order forms. Each student's profit goes into his or her own band account toward the spring trip. Orders and money are due Friday, October 8. Delivery will be the first week of December, so line up a garage and some strong teenagers.

BAND CAMP RECAP
Two weeks in August, 9 to 9, on a parking lot painted with yard lines. Thank you to every parent who brought watermelon, Popsicles and sunscreen, and to the moms who ran the first aid table. We had three blisters, one bee sting, and zero heat problems, because the kids drank their water. Mr. Hollingsworth says this was the best-prepared band he's had in eleven years here. (He says that every year, but this year we believe him.)

BOOSTER OFFICERS 1999-2000
