When he retired in April, Wayne Gretzky held or shared 61 NHL records,
according to the papers. I'm not going to list all 61. These are the ones
that I put up on the bulletin board by our front desk, where the kids can
read them while they lace up. All numbers are NHL only, through the end of
his career.
Career, regular season
| Record |
Number |
| Most goals | 894 |
| Most assists | 1,963 |
| Most points | 2,857 |
| Most hat tricks | 50 |
| Most 100-point seasons | 15 |
| Games played: 1,487, over twenty seasons. Here's the one I make every kid read twice:
his assists alone, 1,963, are more than the total points of any other player in history.
Take away every goal he ever scored and he's still the leading scorer of all time. |
One season
| Record |
Number |
| Most goals in a season (1981-82) | 92 |
| Most assists in a season (1985-86) | 163 |
| Most points in a season (1985-86) | 215 |
| Seasons of 200 points or more (nobody else has one) | 4 |
| That 1981-82 season he played all 80 games.
Ninety-two goals. The old record was 76. I was 31 years old that winter and I remember reading the box scores in
the Times sports section every morning like they were letters from home. |
The fastest 50
| 50 in 39 |
| For most of forty years the magic number in hockey was 50 goals in 50 games.
Maurice Richard did it in 1944-45, and nobody matched him until Mike Bossy, the winter before. Gretzky scored 50 in
39 games. He got there on Wednesday, December 30, 1981, against Philadelphia, with five goals
in one night, the last one into an empty net with a few seconds left. He'd scored four the game
before. Nine goals in two nights. I've managed youth teams that didn't score nine goals in a
month. |
The playoffs
| Record |
Number |
| Most playoff goals | 122 |
| Most playoff assists | 260 |
| Most playoff points | 382 |
| Stanley Cups | 4 |
The hardware
| Trophy |
Times |
| Hart Trophy, league MVP (eight in a row, 1980 through 1987, and again in 1989) | 9 |
| Art Ross Trophy, scoring champion | 10 |
| Lady Byng Trophy, sportsmanship (including this past season, his last) | 5 |
| Conn Smythe Trophy, playoff MVP (1985 and 1988) | 2 |
The Lady Byng is the one I point out to the bantam players. Five times the
league's most gentlemanly player, while being the greatest player there ever
was. You can be the best and still play clean. That's the lesson I want
hanging on the wall at the Glacier long after the rest of us are gone.
