NEXT YEAR
Your Predictions for the 2000 Season
<< Back to the Survival Guide

Every September I ask, and every September you answer. Here's what you're predicting for next year, the first season of a whole new century (or the last season of the old one, depending on who you ask at the bar). I'll keep this page up all winter. In October of 2000 we'll come back and see who was right. I'm betting on hope.

"I've predicted a pennant every single year since 1946. I'm due."
Wilson S., Kankakee, Illinois
"Kerry Wood comes back healthy and strikes out 20 again. Twice."
Cathleen N., Naperville, Illinois
"Sammy hits 71, just to make the folks in St. Louis nervous."
Jason S., Chicago
"The Cubs win it all, and I have to explain to my roommate from Boston why I'm crying in the middle of the quad. She'll understand. She's a Red Sox fan."
Alison B., Champaign, Illinois
"Eighty-five wins. I'm a realist. I'd be thrilled with eighty-five."
Guadalupe L., Aurora, Illinois
"My husband said 'next year' every fall for fifty-one years. He passed in March. I'm taking over for him. Next year."
Beatrice L., Peoria, Illinois
"First place on the Fourth of July. After that I'm not saying anything. I've learned."
Randell P., Davenport, Iowa
"The ivy will be beautiful. That one I'll guarantee."
Rosemarie L., Rockford, Illinois
"If all the computers go haywire at midnight on New Year's, nobody will be able to find the standings, and we can all just say we won."
Albert F., Lockport, Illinois
"Cubs and White Sox in the World Series. The city never recovers. Neither does Benny's marriage."
Boyd M., Valparaiso, Indiana
"Writing from Brewers country. We've got our own waiting to do up here. I predict we finish ahead of you again, and then we'll split a bratwurst and feel sorry for each other."
Erika D., Milwaukee, Wisconsin
"Benny fixed my water heater during the 1998 wild-card game with a radio on the floor next to him, and I have never seen a man work so fast. Prediction: my new water heater will outlast the bullpen."
Barbara Q., Joliet, Illinois

AND FROM THE COSSEY HOUSEHOLD

Dad (67, a fan since the 1940s): the same thing he's said every year as long as I can remember. "They'll be all right." He's never once said when.

Connie (grew up a White Sox fan on the South Side, and we agreed when we got married never to discuss it in October, which has not come up as often as either of us expected): the White Sox. I'm printing it because I love her.

Corey (15): he'll have his learner's permit and can drive us to the games. This scares me more than the bullpen.

Me: Ninety wins. A division title. Kerry back, Sammy healthy, and some young arm nobody's heard of yet who turns out to be the real thing. And I won't buy a single playoff ticket until October. See Rule 1.
