Schedule & Scores | Standings | Roster | Snack Schedule | Coaches' Corner

Hi everybody and welcome to the Astros page! I'm Ron Rock, assistant coach, first-base coach, keeper of the scorebook and apparently now the team webmaster. Coach Phil asked at the first practice if any parent was "good with computers" and I made the mistake of saying I had AOL. So here we are.

The idea is simple. Instead of twelve families calling each other at 7 a.m. on a Saturday to find out if the game is still on, check here first. I will put the scores, the standings and the snack schedule up after every game, usually Saturday night once the kids are in bed. If it's Sunday and nothing's changed, blame the Eagles game.

Schedule & Scores
All games Saturday mornings at the Eastside complex. Home team takes the third-base dugout.

Sept. 11, Astros 7, Cubs 4. What a way to start. Luis and Andre split the pitching and only walked three between them. Nate threw out a runner stealing second in the 4th, which I believe is a first for Nate and possibly for the league. Brandon had two hits and Alyssa drove in the go-ahead runs with a ball down the right field line that the Cubs are still looking for. Game ball: Nate.

Sept. 18, rained out. Field 2 was still under water from Hurricane Floyd. I mean under water. There was a duck. Coach Phil and I went out at 7 a.m. with rakes and a bag of Diamond Dry, took one look and went to get coffee instead. The league says the makeup game will be on a Sunday in October. I'll post it the minute I know.

Sept. 25, Mariners 6, Astros 3. Tough one. We were up 3-1 going into the 5th and then gave up four runs on two walks, a bloop and an error I will not describe because the young man involved has already apologized to everyone including the umpire. The Mariners are big this year. Marcus pitched great in relief and struck out the side in the 6th. Game ball: Marcus.

Trophy Fall Standings
Through Saturday, Sept. 25. The league doesn't do playoffs in the fall but they do keep standings, and the kids check.

The Roster
First names only on here, league rules. Positions are where they mostly play. In fall ball everybody bats in the order and everybody plays at least three innings in the field, so this changes every week.

# Player Pos. Scorebook note
2LuisSS, PBest glove on the team. Wants to be Derek Jeter or a veterinarian.
4Alyssa2B, PLeads the team in RBIs and in telling the boys to hustle.
7NateCWill catch anything. Asked if he can wear the gear home.
9DevinCFFastest kid in the league. Working on stopping at third when told.
11Brandon1B3 for 5 so far. Tallest Astro by a mile.
13Sam3BFirst year in the majors division. Not afraid of the ball at all.
15AndreLF, PThrows a curveball he is not allowed to throw. Coach Phil has spoken to him.
17Colin2BBest bunter on the team. Also best at finding four-leaf clovers in right.
21EricRFDrew four walks in two games. Great eye (or he just likes to watch).
23MarcusP, 1BStruck out the side on Saturday. Quiet kid, loud fastball.
24OwenOFYoungest Astro. Got his first hit Sept. 11 and kept the ball.
31RickyC, 3BBackup catcher, team comedian, knows every word to the Pokemon theme.

Snack Schedule
One family per game brings drinks and a snack for after. Twelve kids plus whatever little brothers and sisters are hanging around, so figure on 18. Cold drinks please, it's still hot out there. No peanuts or peanut butter anything, we have an allergy on the team. If you can't make your week, trade with somebody and e-mail me so I can fix the list.

Coaches' Corner
Manager: Phil Arroyo  ·  Assistant: Ron Rock (me)  ·  Team parent: Denise Harrold

A few things from Coach Phil, which I am posting because he asked me to and because he is bigger than me:
  • Be at the field 45 minutes before game time. Warm-ups are not optional.
  • Bring your glove, your hat, your water bottle and your cup. Yes, your cup.
  • Hustle on and off the field. Every inning. Even when we're losing. Especially when we're losing.
  • Parents: please cheer as loud as you want. Please let the coaches do the coaching and the umpires do the umpiring. They are sixteen-year-olds doing their best for twenty bucks a game.
  • Nobody leaves the field until the equipment bags are packed and the dugout is clean.
Picture Day, Oct. 2. Full uniform, hat on, hair combed if at all possible. Order envelopes are in the equipment bag. When the pictures come back I'll try to get the team one on here. I don't own a scanner but my brother-in-law does, and he owes me for helping him move.

Thanks to everybody who came over to Coach Phil's in August to watch the Little League World Series. Japan won the final, but those Phenix City, Alabama kids got all the way to Williamsport and the last game, and our guys talked about nothing else for a week. Maybe someday, Astros. Maybe someday.

And a big thank you to Brandt Plumbing & Heating for sponsoring us again this fall, uniforms, hats and the new catcher's helmet that Nate refuses to take off. If your water heater quits, you know who to call.
