THREE-PEAT!
1997 ★ 1998 ★ 1999 WNBA CHAMPIONS
WE DID IT AGAIN!!!   HOUSTON COMETS ARE THE CHAMPS THREE YEARS IN A ROW!!!   GO COMETS!!!   THIS ONE WAS FOR KIM #10
About Me ★ Three Titles ★ Player Cards ★ The 1999 Finals ★ For Kim Perrot #10

★ About Me

Hi! My name is Jade and I'm 12 and I live in Texas. I play point guard on my school team, the Lady Wildcats. I am one of the shortest girls on the team but I am the fastest at bringing the ball up, and Coach says I have the best court vision, which means I can see who's open.

My Aunt Kathleen took me to my first Comets game in 1998, and then she took me again this July for my birthday, at the Compaq Center. When you walk in and it's loud and everybody is wearing red, it's the best feeling in the world. I made a sign that said COMETS 3-PEAT and I held it up the whole fourth quarter. My arms were so tired.

I made this page because the Comets just won their THIRD championship in a row and somebody has to put it on the Internet. My cousin helped me with the HTML.

★ Three Titles in a Row!

The WNBA started in 1997, so the Comets have won EVERY championship there has ever been. Every single one. Nobody else has one yet!

YEAR WHO WE BEAT FINALS MVP
1997 New York Liberty, in one big championship game in Houston. The very first WNBA champions! Cynthia Cooper
1998 Phoenix Mercury, 2 games to 1. Cynthia Cooper
1999 New York Liberty AGAIN, 2 games to 1. Ha! Cynthia Cooper (again!!)

★ Player Cards

These are like trading cards except I made them. (I have the real cards too. My Swoopes is in a plastic case.)

#14 CYNTHIA COOPER
Guard
★ Played college ball at USC and won two national championships there.
★ Won an Olympic gold medal in 1988.
★ Played in Europe for years and years before there was a WNBA, because there was no league here for her!
★ League MVP in 1997 and 1998, and MVP of the Finals all THREE years.
Jade says: She is the best player in the world and she was in her thirties when the WNBA started. So it's never too late. (My mom likes that part.)
#22 SHERYL SWOOPES
Forward
★ She's from Brownfield, Texas. A TEXAS girl!
★ Won the national championship at Texas Tech in 1993 and scored 47 points in the championship game.
★ Olympic gold medal in 1996.
★ The very first player the WNBA ever signed.
★ She had her own Nike shoe, the Air Swoopes.
★ She had her baby boy Jordan in 1997 and came back and played that same season.
Jade says: I want the shoes. They don't come in my size yet. I checked.
#7 TINA THOMPSON
Forward
★ She was the number one pick in the very first WNBA draft, in 1997.
★ Played college ball at USC, like Cynthia Cooper.
★ Rebounds like crazy and can shoot from outside too.
Jade says: She's the youngest of the big three, so she'll be winning championships when I'm in college. Maybe I'll be on her team. You never know!
COACH VAN CHANCELLOR
Head Coach
★ Coached the women's team at Ole Miss for a long time before he came to Houston.
★ Has been the Comets' coach since the very first game, and has won every championship.
Jade says: My coach at school says Coach Chancellor is the reason the Comets play such good defense. My coach also says WE need to play better defense. I got the hint.

★ The 1999 Finals, Game by Game

It was best two out of three, against the New York Liberty, just like the very first year.

GAME 1  -  at New York  -  COMETS WIN!
They played at Madison Square Garden and we won on THEIR court. I watched it at home and I was jumping on the couch. My mom made me stop jumping on the couch.
GAME 2  -  at Houston  -  Liberty win
We were SO close. We were ahead with just a couple seconds left. Then Teresa Weatherspoon threw it up from behind half court, and it went IN at the buzzer, and they won. I could not believe it. I put a pillow over my face. I have to be fair though, it was an amazing shot, and she is a point guard too. If I ever make a shot like that I will probably faint.
GAME 3  -  at Houston  -  Sunday, September 5  -  COMETS 59, LIBERTY 47
THREE-PEAT!!! We played great defense the whole game and never let them get going. When the buzzer went off I jumped up and screamed, and then I started crying, because I was thinking about Kim. Aunt Kathleen called me right after and we screamed on the phone for like a whole minute.
