Sunny's Page!
by Emily, age 9 (and Mom helped type)

Hi! My name is Emily and I am 9 years old and I'm in 4th grade. This is a page about my parakeet Sunny. He died in August. My mom said if I made a page about him then people all over the world could know about him, so that is what this is.

The bird picture up there is a cardinal because there wasn't a blue parakeet picture. PRETEND HE IS BLUE!!!

Words Sunny Could Say

1. Pretty bird
2. Emily!!! (he said it like EM-ly)
3. Hi Sunny
4. Night night
5. Uh oh

He could also make the beep the microwave makes and Dad would go to the kitchen and nothing was in there. That was his best joke. And he could whistle the first part of the song Mom whistles when she does the dishes but not the end part.

The first word he learned was pretty bird. The second one was my name. It took him a WHOLE YEAR to learn my name. I said it to him every day before school. My little brother Carson tried to teach him to say Carson but he never did. Ha ha Carson!

His Mirror and His Bell

Sunny had a little round mirror in his cage and he talked to the bird in the mirror all the time. He thought it was his friend. Mom said it's OK to let him think that. He would bonk it with his beak and then talk really fast like he was telling it a secret.

He had a silver bell too. When he wanted us to come play with him he rang it over and over and over. DING DING DING DING DING. Every morning at like 6:30. Dad said Sunny was better than an alarm clock and also worse.

At night we put a towel over his cage so he would go to sleep and I would say night night Sunny and he would say night night back. Sometimes.

The Time He Landed on Grandpa's Head

This is the funniest story about Sunny. Last Thanksgiving my grandma and grandpa came over and we let Sunny out of his cage to fly around the living room. (You have to close all the doors first!!) He flew around two times and then he landed right on top of Grandpa's head. Grandpa doesn't have very much hair so Sunny slid a little bit.

Grandpa sat SO still like a statue and he said, Is there a bird on my head? And everybody laughed so hard. Then Sunny said PRETTY BIRD really loud right on top of Grandpa's head and Mom laughed so hard she had to sit on the floor. Grandpa said that was the nicest thing anybody said to him all year.

Grandpa tells that story every time he comes over now.

What Happened

In August Sunny started being puffy and sleepy and he didn't want to eat his millet and he didn't ring his bell. Mom took him to a special bird doctor. The doctor said he was very sick inside.

Mom explained to me that birds hide it when they are sick. That is because in the wild if a bird looks sick then a bigger animal might try to get it, so birds act like everything is fine for as long as they can. So by the time you can tell, they are already very very sick. She said nobody could have known sooner and it was not my fault and it was not anybody's fault. I asked her two times and she said it both times.

Sunny died the next morning. Mom was holding him in a towel. I got to say goodbye to him first.

Sunny's Funeral

a rose We had a funeral for Sunny in the backyard under the rosebush, because it has red roses and Sunny liked to look out the window at it. I put him in a shoebox from my new school shoes. I put his favorite millet in there and a little piece of my blue blanket so he would be warm.

Dad dug the hole. Carson sang Jesus Loves Me. My best friend Wendy came over and brought a flower. I read my poem (it is down below). Then we covered it up and I put a rock on top that I painted. It is blue and it says SUNNY in white paint.

I go out and say hi to him sometimes.

My Poem for Sunny

Sunny

Sunny you were blue as the sky
You rang your bell to say hi
You said my name and pretty bird
The best bird words I ever heard

Now you sleep under the rose
Where you go nobody knows
But if it's up in the sky so blue
You will match it, and I love you

by Emily

(I typed my poem by myself!!)

Parakeet Facts!!

I looked these up in a bird book at the library.

Parakeets come from AUSTRALIA! They live there in the wild in big big flocks.

Their real name is budgerigar. That's why people call them budgies. It's fun to say. Budgerigar budgerigar budgerigar.

Wild ones are green and yellow. Blue ones like Sunny come from people raising them.

Boys usually have a blue bump over their beak and girls usually have a brown or tan one.

They can learn to talk! Boys are usually better talkers.

They need a cuttlebone in their cage to keep their beak healthy. It's a white thing and it's not really a bone.

They can live to be about 5 to 10 years old, or even more. Sunny only got to be 3. Mom says sometimes that just happens and nobody knows why.

My Drawing of Sunny

under construction
I drew Sunny with crayons sitting on his swing with his bell. It is on our refrigerator. Mom says she will scan it and put it right here someday when we get a scanner. Coming soon!!!

Mom says maybe I can get a new bird at Christmas if I want to. I'm not sure yet. If I do I am not going to name him Sunny because there is only one Sunny.

Thank you for reading about my bird!!! Please e-mail me and tell me about YOUR pet!

A note from Emily's mom: Thank you so much to everyone who has written to Emily since we put Sunny's page up. She reads every e-mail, and the ones from other kids about their own birds and dogs and hamsters have meant more to her than I can say. A few of you sent parakeet care tips for "next time," and we've saved every one. We're taking it slow on the next time. Thank you for being so kind to a nine-year-old.
