Hannah's Poem Page!!
Hi! I am Hannah. I am 9 and I am in 4th grade in Iowa. I LOVE writing poems! Last spring my teacher Mrs. Waters did a poetry unit and I wrote about a million. Here are my best ten. My cat Pickles is in most of them. My mom helps me type.

1. My Name (an Acrostic)
An acrostic is your name going down, and every line starts with one of the letters.

Happy almost all the time
Always reading under the covers
Nine and a half years old
Never wants to eat her peas
Always has a cat on her lap
Helps Grandpa on the farm

2. Thunder (a Cinquain)
A cinquain has five lines. The syllables go 2, 4, 6, 8, 2. You clap them out!

Thunder
loud and grumbly
rolling over the barn
and Pickles hides under my bed
Boom! Boom!

3. Day and Night (a Diamante)
A diamante is shaped like a diamond. It turns into the opposite, and the middle line is where it switches.

Day
bright, sunny
swinging, biking, playing
sun, sky, moon, stars
sleeping, dreaming, snoring
dark, quiet
Night

4 and 5. Two Haiku
Haiku come from Japan. Three lines: 5 syllables, then 7, then 5. They are usually about nature.

Corn rows in the sun
Grandpa says they are so tall
I can't see the house

Snow on the mailbox
Pickles watches from the porch
she does not like it

6. Louise (a Limerick)
A limerick is a funny poem. Lines 1, 2 and 5 rhyme, lines 3 and 4 rhyme, and it goes da DUM da da DUM.

There once was a cow named Louise
who wanted to climb in the trees.
She tried with her hoof,
then fell on the roof,
and now she just sits in the breeze.

7. What Is Orange?
A color poem uses all five senses!

Orange is a pumpkin on the porch.
Orange is Pickles's fur.
Orange tastes like sherbet on a hot day.
Orange sounds like leaves crunching.
Orange smells like the oranges at Christmas.
Orange feels like a warm blanket.
Orange is the sun going down behind the barn.

8. Tornado (a Shape Poem)
In a shape poem the words make the shape. Mine is a tornado, skinny at the bottom like a real one.

the wind is spinning round and round across the field
the siren goes off and we run down to the basement
Mom brings the flashlight and the radio
Pickles rides in the laundry basket
we wait and wait and wait
then it is so quiet
it went away
whew

9. Pickles
Just a rhyming poem for my cat.

Pickles
Pickles is my orange cat.
She is not skinny. She is fat.
She sleeps all day on the laundry pile
and purrs at me when I walk down the aisle.
(The aisle is the hall. It just had to rhyme.)
She knocks my pencils on the floor
and cries outside my bedroom door.
We named her Pickles because when she was small
she stole a pickle and ate it ALL.

10. Grandpa's Tractor
For Grandpa's birthday. It's on his refrigerator now.

Grandpa's tractor is big and green,
the biggest thing I've ever seen.
I sit up high on Grandpa's lap,
he lets me steer, I wear his cap.
We go past the corn and past the beans,
and past the creek and the trampoline.
It goes so slow, it's really loud,
I wave at Mom, I feel so proud.
When I grow up and I am tall,
I'll drive it by myself. That's all!

Poems I'm working on: one about the State Fair (I saw the butter cow!), one about my best friend moving away, and a really long one about a horse.

Please write me and tell me which poem you like best!
