WELCOME TO THE FACTORY

My name is Kyle and I am 12. I make custom maps for StarCraft. StarCraft comes with a map editor on the CD called StarEdit, and you can make your own maps with it, with your own terrain and units and even your own rules. Most people never even open it. I have opened it a lot.

So far I have made 11 maps. I play them with my friends on Battle.net. (I got Brood War for my birthday, but I make my maps for regular StarCraft, so they work for everybody.) This page has my five best maps (well, four best and one that never worked, which I put on here because it is educational). Every map has a card with all the facts about it, and a rating from my friends, out of 5. I didn't change any of the ratings even the bad one.

If you want to make your own maps, I wrote down everything I know on the StarEdit Tips page. It is a lot.

MAP #1: BUNKER HILL DEFENSE
TYPEUse Map Settings (defense)
SIZE96 x 96
TILESETInstallation
PLAYERS4 humans (Terran) vs. computer (Zerg)
HOW YOU WINSurvive 15 waves
All four players share one base on a hill in the middle of an Installation map, with bunkers around the edge. Every few minutes a wave of Zerg comes in from the four corners and attacks. Each wave is bigger than the last one and has new kinds of Zerg in it. You start with Marines and you get more money after every wave, so you can build Firebats and Siege Tanks and missile turrets. Wave 15 has Ultralisks. If you're alive when wave 15 is dead, everybody wins. If the Command Center dies, everybody loses. Teamwork is VERY important. If one person doesn't defend their corner it all falls apart and then everybody yells at Joseph.
FRIENDS' RATING: 4 1/2 out of 5  "Make wave 15 easier" — Joseph

MAP #2: ZERGLING DERBY
TYPEUse Map Settings (race)
SIZE128 x 64
TILESETSpace Platform
PLAYERS2 to 6
HOW YOU WINFirst zergling to the finish line
Everybody gets ONE zergling and that's it. You race down a long twisty track on a space platform. The track has things in the way that shoot at you, so you have to time it and go when they're looking the other way. If your zergling dies, a trigger makes you a new one back at the start, so you're never out, you're just behind. The first person to bring their zergling to the location I named "Finish Line" wins and everyone else loses. It's short, like five minutes, so we play it like ten times in a row.
FRIENDS' RATING: 5 out of 5  everybody's favorite

MAP #3: TWIN RIVERS
TYPEMelee
SIZE128 x 128
TILESETJungle World
PLAYERS4 (made for 2 on 2)
HOW YOU WINRegular melee: destroy everybody
A real map for real games, no triggers. Two rivers go across the jungle and split it into three parts. Each team has two bases on its side that are close together so you can help your partner. The middle part has an expansion with extra minerals and two gas geysers, and there are two bridges to get there. Whoever holds the middle usually wins. I spent the most time on this one making sure it's fair, with the same amount of minerals for everybody and the same distance to the middle.
FRIENDS' RATING: 3 1/2 out of 5  "The top left base is too good" — Joshua (it isn't)

MAP #4: EVACUATION
TYPEUse Map Settings (rescue)
SIZE96 x 128
TILESETBadlands
PLAYERS2 humans together vs. computer (Zerg)
HOW YOU WINGet 20 civilians to the dropship pad
A town on the Badlands is being overrun by Zerg. There are 30 civilians hiding in the buildings around the town. You and your partner have a small squad and you have to go find the civilians (when you get close, a trigger gives them to you) and walk them all the way back to the dropship pad at the bottom of the map. When you bring 20 to the pad, you win. If 11 of them die, you lose, because then you can't get 20 anymore. Civilians are slow and they don't fight, so you have to protect them. It's hard but in a good way. The trigger for losing counts how many civilians died. I'm proud of that one.
FRIENDS' RATING: 4 out of 5  "Civilians are so SLOW" — Anthony

MAP #5: FORTRESS OF DOOM (DOES NOT WORK)
TYPEUse Map Settings (supposed to be)
SIZE128 x 128
TILESETAsh World
PLAYERS8
HOW YOU WINNobody knows
This was going to be the biggest map ever. Seven players attack a giant fortress on the lava and the eighth player defends it, and the fortress keeps getting reinforcements. Here is what happened:

Try 1: I made the victory trigger with the condition "Always" by accident. Everybody won the second the game started. Everybody. At the same time.

Try 2: I fixed that. But the reinforcements trigger had Create Unit and Preserve Trigger and no Wait, so it made new units over and over, as fast as the game could go. After about a minute the fortress was so full of Hydralisks you couldn't see the lava and the game got really slow and then it couldn't make any more units at all.

Try 3: I added a Wait and something else broke and I don't know what. I have looked at the triggers like a hundred times.

I am going to start it over from scratch someday. I learned a lot from it. Mostly about Preserve Trigger.
FRIENDS' RATING: 1 out of 5  "The 1 is for the name" — Evan

MY OTHER 6 MAPS

Not as good, but they work: Marine Ball (soccer with a Marine), Hold the Ridge (1 vs 1 melee), Probe Tag, Island Hopping (4 player melee, you need transports), Last Bunker (defense, too hard, the first one I made) and Mineral Rush (who can mine the most in 10 minutes). E-mail me if you want any of these too.

CLANS

I'm not in a clan yet. One Friday night I asked for a tryout at CLAN CREEP. They are a Zerg clan on Battle.net and they mean it, you have to play Zerg in their clan games, no exceptions. They do tryouts on Friday nights in their channel on U.S. West. I lost my tryout game. BUT I remembered my overlords, which on their page they say is what they watch for. So I might try again. I am practicing Zerg now, on Zergling Derby mostly, which is probably not the right kind of practice.
