JONATHAN'S DINOSAUR STORIES
starring STANLEY THE STEGOSAURUS!!!

*** He lives in our garage!!! ***

About Me!
Hi! My name is Jonathan and I am 9 years old and I am in 4th grade. I live in Colorado. I like dinosaurs (obviously!!), drawing, soccer, and Legos. I have a little sister named Andrea who is 5. My best friend is Bryan.

My favorite dinosaur is Stegosaurus because it has spikes and also because it is the state fossil of Colorado, which is where I live! My second favorite is Ankylosaurus. When I grow up I am going to be a paleontologist. That is a scientist who digs up fossils. I have been to the dinosaur part of the museum in Denver THREE times.

I write stories about Stanley. He is a stegosaurus who lives in our garage. I tell the stories and my dad types them because I am slow at typing. He is only allowed to fix the spelling.

The Stories:
1. Stanley's First Day
2. Stanley Goes to Show and Tell
3. Stanley and the Snowstorm
4. Stanley Meets Biscuit New!
REAL DINOSAUR FACTS!! (so you know what is pretend)

Story #1: Stanley's First Day

One Saturday morning I went into the garage to get my bike, and there was a STEGOSAURUS in there!

He was standing between the lawn mower and my dad's workbench. He was green and brown with orange plates on his back, and he was about as big as our van. He was eating my mom's tomato plants. The ones in the pots by the door. He ate the leaves and the stems and the tomatoes and even a little bit of one pot.

I said "Hi." He said "Hmmm." That is the only word he knows.

I ran inside and told my mom there was a stegosaurus eating her tomatoes. She said "That's nice, honey" because she was on the phone. Then she came out to the garage. She did not say "That's nice" this time. She said "MY TOMATOES!" really loud.

The stegosaurus felt bad. His plates turned red, which is what happens when he is embarrassed. (That part is pretend. Look at my facts.)

My dad came out. He looked at the stegosaurus for a long time. Then he said "Well, he can stay if he doesn't eat the car."

I named him Stanley because he looks like a Stanley. Andrea wanted to name him Sparkle. We voted and I won because Dad voted for Stanley. Mom did not vote. She was still looking at her pots.

That night Stanley slept in the garage with his tail by the recycling. Dad had to park in the driveway. He said that's fine until it snows.

Mom planted new tomatoes in the backyard with a fence around them. Stanley looks at them over the fence. Hmmm.

THE END

Story #2: Stanley Goes to Show and Tell

On Friday it was my turn for show and tell. Last week Bryan brought a real snake skin and everybody said WOW. I knew I had to beat a snake skin.

So I brought Stanley.

We walked to school because he doesn't fit in the van. He IS the van size. Dad came too to make sure Stanley stayed on the sidewalk. He only stepped on one bush and it was a small one.

Stanley did not fit through the door of my classroom. Mrs. Stultz said "Oh my goodness" and then she said "Everybody outside!" So the whole class had show and tell on the playground.

I told everybody that Stanley is a stegosaurus and he eats plants and he has 17 plates on his back and 4 spikes on his tail. Bryan asked if he could pet him. I said yes but not the spikes. Stanley said "Hmmm." Everybody laughed.

Somebody asked if Stanley bites. I said no, stegosauruses have little teeth for chewing leaves, not for biting kids. That is a REAL fact.

Then Stanley ate the flowers in front of the principal's office. They were yellow ones. The principal came out and looked at the flowers and looked at Stanley and went back inside.

Mrs. Stultz said it was the best show and tell in 22 years of teaching. She gave me a sticker that says SUPER! Bryan said a stegosaurus beats a snake skin and he is not even mad.

On the way home Stanley's plates were red the whole way. I think it was the flowers.

THE END

Story #3: Stanley and the Snowstorm

In Colorado it can snow in October and March and April and sometimes even May. This story happened in March.

It snowed all night, and in the morning the snow was up to my knees and there was NO SCHOOL! I ran to the garage to tell Stanley and he was shivering. His plates were blue. (Pretend!)

In my story Stanley is cold-blooded, so he likes it warm. (Real scientists are still trying to figure out if dinosaurs were warm-blooded or cold-blooded. Nobody knows for sure yet. Maybe I will find out.)

I got every blanket in the hall closet. Andrea brought her Barbie blanket. It covered one of his toes. Mom made hot cocoa but Stanley doesn't like cocoa, so she warmed up some spinach for him. He liked that.

Dad brought out the space heater and put it by Stanley's tummy. Stanley said "Hmmm" in a happy way. You can tell by how long the Hmmm is.

Then Stanley wanted to help. He went out on the driveway and swished his tail back and forth, back and forth, and he cleared the whole driveway in two minutes! Then he did Mr. Milburn's driveway next door. Mr. Milburn came out in his bathrobe and said "Well, I'll be." He gave Stanley a whole bag of lettuce.

Dad said Stanley is better than a snowblower, and cheaper too, except for the spinach.

When the sun came out Stanley lay down in the driveway with his plates sticking up and got warm. Andrea and I made a snow stegosaurus next to him so he would have a friend. It melted by Thursday. Stanley looked at the puddle for a long time.

THE END

Story #4: Stanley Meets Biscuit New!

Mr. Milburn next door has a dog named Biscuit. Biscuit is a beagle and she barks at everything. She barks at the mailman and the garbage truck and leaves.

The first time Biscuit saw Stanley she barked so much she fell over. Stanley was scared. He went in the garage and hid behind the lawn mower, but only his head fit behind it. The rest of him was just standing there.

I said "Stanley, she is only a beagle." He said "Hmmm" in a scared way. That is a short Hmmm.

So I made a plan. Every day after school I sat in the driveway with Stanley, and Mr. Milburn sat on his porch with Biscuit, and every day we moved a little bit closer. Mr. Milburn says that is how you make friends with a dog. Biscuit stopped barking on Wednesday. On Thursday she sniffed Stanley's foot. On Friday she licked his tail (not the spikes).

Now they are best friends. Biscuit sleeps under Stanley's tail in the shade and Stanley lets her. When the mailman comes Biscuit still barks, and now Stanley says "Hmmm" at the same time, so it is VERY loud. The mailman walks faster at our house.

Mr. Milburn says Biscuit is the only beagle in Colorado with a dinosaur. I think he is right.

THE END

Next story: Stanley Goes Camping. Coming soon!!!

REAL DINOSAUR FACTS!!
Some of my stories are pretend and some parts are TRUE. Here is how to tell.

TRUE!PRETEND!
Stegosaurus lived in the Late Jurassic. That is about 150 million years ago.Stanley lives in our garage. (I wish!!)
It ate plants. It was an herbivore. It had little teeth for chewing leaves.Stanley eats tomatoes. There were NO tomatoes back then. There weren't even any flowers yet! They ate ferns and plants like that.
Its brain was really small for how big it was.Stanley says "Hmmm." Real dinosaurs didn't talk. (We don't know what they sounded like.)
Some of the first Stegosaurus fossils ever found were found in COLORADO!Stanley's plates turn red when he's embarrassed and blue when he's cold. Scientists don't know for sure what the plates were for.
Stegosaurus became the Colorado state fossil in 1982.Stanley is the size of our van. Real ones were bigger, almost as long as a school bus.
It had plates on its back and 4 spikes on the end of its tail.Stanley went to my school. (Mrs. Stultz says she would let him.)

MY FAVORITE FACT: Stegosaurus and T. rex did NOT live at the same time! T. rex lived millions and millions of years later. There was more time between Stegosaurus and T. rex than there is between T. rex and US! So in the movies when they fight, that is pretend too.
