QUINCY PLUMBING & HEATING (RETIRED)
SERVICE CALL   JOB NO. 2705-5

Leaks and Clogs
What's wrong, why, and how to fix it. Back to the work order.

Thirty-eight years of service calls taught me that the customer almost always describes the symptom ("it's making a noise") and the plumber has to find the cause. Same here. Find what you're seeing in the left column. The likely causes are in order, most likely first, the way I'd check them if I were standing in your kitchen.

SYMPTOM CAUSE AND FIX
Broken picture (an empty box, or a little square icon with a red X) 1. Never sent it. Look on the Remote Site side. If it's not there, send it.
2. Capitals don't match. The page says dog.gif and the file is Dog.GIF. Rename the file to small letters and fix the page to match.
3. Sent as ASCII. Hot water in the cold line. Click Binary and send the picture again over the top of the bad one.
4. Wrong folder. The page looks for pictures/dog.gif and the picture is sitting next to the page instead, or the other way around.
5. Pointing at your own house. Look at the IMG tag. If it says C:\ or file: anywhere, the page is looking for the picture on your hard drive, where it worked fine for you and nobody else. Change it to just the file name.
The old page still shows after you uploaded the new one 1. Your browser kept a copy. Browsers save pages to show them faster the second time. In Netscape, hold down Shift and click Reload. In Internet Explorer, hold down Ctrl and click Refresh. That gets you a fresh copy.
2. You fixed one copy and sent another. If you keep your pages in two folders on your computer, you can edit one and upload the other. Ask me how I know.
3. You sent it to the wrong folder. See Measure Twice on the work order.
A big file won't go, or stops partway 1. Over the limit. Each file can be 1 MB at most. That's a lot of page, but not a lot of photograph. Make the picture smaller in your paint program, or save it as a JPEG, and try again.
2. Out of room. You get 11 MB in all. Check how much you've used on the File Manager page, and clear out what you don't need, like any basement.
530 Login incorrect The server didn't accept your member name or password. Check the spelling. Capitals count, so make sure Caps Lock is off. Use your member name, not your e-mail address. If you saved the password in the program, type it in again; you may have saved it wrong.
550 No such file or directory, or Permission denied The server won't do what you asked. Either the file or folder isn't there by the name you gave (check spelling and capitals, again), or you're trying to put something where you aren't allowed. Make sure you're in your own folder. And remember program files like .exe can't be posted at all.
Hung up in the middle of sending 1. Call waiting. Somebody called, the phone beeped, and the modem dropped the line. You can turn call waiting off for one call by putting *70, in front of the number your computer dials (the comma makes it wait a second). Ask your phone company if yours is different.
2. Somebody picked up the extension. Tell the household.
Either way, connect again and send the whole file over. Half a file is worse than none.
Page shows all the tags as plain text The file's name doesn't end in .html. Notepad likes to put .txt on the end, so you get index.html.txt, and Windows hides the .txt so it looks right on your screen. Look on the Remote Site side, where you see the whole name. Rename it.
People who type your address don't get your front page Your front page has to be named index.html, all small letters. Not Index.html, not home.html, not index.htm. The inspector is particular.

Still leaking? Write and tell me what you did, what you expected, and exactly what it said. Copy the words off the screen; "it gave me an error" is "it's making a noise." I answer in the evenings, after the ballgame.
