Forty-one tractors pulled this year in five weight classes, the most we've ever had. Thanks to
Robert Haffey and the pull committee, to the co-op for the use of their scale, and to the
fourteen men who stood out there from five o'clock until dark stepping on the sled.
THE RULES
- Tractors built in 1959 or earlier, on rubber.
- Weight is tractor and driver together, weighed on the co-op scale before you pull. Add weights to get up to your class, but not over it.
- Speed limit 3 miles an hour. A judge walks alongside. Go over and you're done. This is an antique pull, not a hot rod show.
- Hitch: a solid drawbar, fixed in place, no higher than 20 inches off the ground and at least 18 inches back from the center of the rear axle. No hitching to the axle housing, no swinging drawbars, no chains.
- The sled is our old step-on sled. As it goes past the marks, men step on, one after another, so it gets heavier the farther you go. A full pull is 200 feet. Two or more full pulls in a class and they pull off.
- Front end comes off the ground more than a little and the judge will flag you. Be careful out there.
3,500 POUND CLASS
| # | Driver and tractor | Distance |
| 1 | Henry Loggins, 1950 Ford 8N | 151' 4" |
| 2 | James Hoeft, 1939 John Deere B | 147' 9" |
| 3 | Curtis Letourneau, 1944 Allis-Chalmers WC | 139' 2" |
| 4 | Wayne Cheatham, 1947 Farmall A | 122' 0" |
[James: The B was robbed. Henry's 8N had a bigger man on the sled at the 140-foot mark
than I did.] [Janice: James, the sled is the same for everybody.]
4,500 POUND CLASS
| # | Driver and tractor | Distance |
| 1 | Jerry Westphal, 1950 Oliver 77 | 168' 11" |
| 2 | James Hoeft, 1941 Farmall H | 166' 3" |
| 3 | Bobby Humphrey, 1951 Allis-Chalmers WD | 160' 0" |
| 4 | Don Norden, 1948 Farmall H | 157' 6" |
A featured-make Oliver winning in the featured-make year. Jerry has not stopped smiling.
5,500 POUND CLASS
| # | Driver and tractor | Distance |
| 1 | Robert Haffey, 1947 Farmall M | 182' 7" |
| 2 | William Jensen, 1950 John Deere A | 179' 1" |
| 3 | James Hoeft, 1951 Farmall M | 174' 6" |
| 4 | Hobert Tschida, 1946 Case DC | 171' 0" |
Yes, the pull committee chairman won. No, he did not judge his own class. Don did.
6,500 POUND CLASS
| # | Driver and tractor | Distance |
| 1 | Jacob Herzog, 1952 Farmall Super M | 196' 2" |
| 2 | Lee Starbuck, 1949 Minneapolis-Moline U | 188' 8" |
| 3 | Robert Haffey, 1947 Farmall M | 181' 0" |
7,500 POUND CLASS
| # | Driver and tractor | Distance |
| 1 | Jerry Westphal, 1958 John Deere 730 | full pull, won pull-off |
| 2 | Clifford Dumont, 1955 Farmall 400 | full pull |
| 3 | Paul Vargas, 1956 Oliver Super 88 | 192' 5" |
Two full pulls and a pull-off at the end of a long day, with every man left on the grounds
standing on that sled. The 730 went 171 feet in the pull-off and the 400 went 163. Clifford is 76 and
says he'll be back next year with more weight. Jerry won two classes on two different shades of green,
Oliver and Deere, and the Farmall men are taking it hard.
KIDS' PEDAL TRACTOR PULL
47 kids, three classes, one little sled, and more cheering than the big pull got. Every kid got a
ribbon. The winners:
| Ages | 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
| 4 and 5 | Danielle | Corey | Naomi |
| 6 and 7 | Megan | Tyrone | Roman |
| 8 to 11 | Beth | Adam | Lisa |
Danielle is four and pulled the sled clear to the end with her tongue out the whole way.
That was the best pull of the weekend, big tractors included.
