THE SALE BILL
Back to Sexton Farm
This is the bill Ernie Schofield had printed up and posted at the feed store,
the post office and the diner the month before the sale. Mildred stood at the
clerk's table all day and wrote down in pencil what every lot brought, and I
have typed it all in here, her numbers beside his words. Farmers have asked me
for it. Here it is.

ERNEST SCHOFIELD, AUCTIONEER

My notes:
* The Farmall H was my first new tractor. Lawrence bought it back himself
and brought it down to the village. It sits in my garage. I start it on the
first Saturday of every month whether it needs it or not.
** The ox yoke was my grandfather's. The Defords bought it and hung it over
the barn door, which is where it belongs.
The sale came to a little over $170,000 before Ernie's commission. The
cattle were half of it. The land was sold separately that fall. People ask
me if that seems like a lot of money. It is a lot of money. It is also four
generations.
