NAP TIME - back to the newest strip

The Archive

Every NAP TIME so far, oldest first, so you can start at the beginning and read down. All four are on this one page, about 165K together, so if you're on a modem, now's a good time to go pour yourself a cup of coffee. Each one has a big version you can click on too.

Strip #1  ·  Monday, September 13, 1999

NAP TIME #1, Monday 9/13/99. Panel 1: Marvin tiptoes through the doorway of the twins' room, easing the door almost shut and holding his breath. MARVIN, in a tiny whisper: Both asleep. At the same time. Panel 2: Marvin sinks happily into the couch with his coffee mug, a sketchbook and a pencil. MARVIN: Two whole hours. I'm going to draw. I'm going to be an artist. Panel 3: A close-up of Marvin on the couch, his eyelids drooping, the sketchbook sliding off his lap. Panel 4: Marvin asleep on the couch with his mouth open, while Rebecca and Luke, awake again, tuck a crocheted afghan over him. REBECCA: Shhh. Daddy's napping.
Big version (640 x 673, 101K)
Marvin says: The very first one, and the afternoon that started it all. Both of them went down at once for the first time in weeks, and I had big plans. I woke up at ten after three under the afghan. Nobody will tell me who tucked me in. When I ask, Rebecca says "shhh."

Strip #2  ·  Thursday, September 16, 1999

NAP TIME #2, Thursday 9/16/99. Panel 1: In a grocery store aisle, Marvin pushes a shopping cart with Rebecca and Luke side by side in the seat. MARVIN: Okay. We are in and out. Five things. Panel 2: Rebecca points past Luke's nose at a shelf of bright cereal boxes. REBECCA: That one has a prize! Panel 3: Luke quietly eats a peeled banana in the cart while Marvin looks on. MARVIN: Luke, we haven't bought that yet. Panel 4: At the checkout, the cashier with a beehive hairdo raises an eyebrow and one finger at Marvin, whose cart is heaped high with groceries, with Luke peeking out of the middle of the pile. CASHIER: Five things? MARVIN: ...Five things each.
Big version (640 x 673, 99K)
Marvin says: We went in for five things and came out with nineteen. Rebecca will point straight across her brother's face to get to a prize. Luke really did eat the banana before we got to the checkout, so we paid for the peel. The cashier is real, and so is the eyebrow, and she would like it known that she has seen worse. And yes, I went to the store in my slippers. It had been a long week.

Strip #3  ·  Monday, September 20, 1999

NAP TIME #3, Monday 9/20/99. Panel 1: In the kitchen, Marvin talks on the wall phone, its long coiled cord stretched out across the room. MARVIN: Hi, Mom! Yes, everything's under control. Panel 2: Behind his back, Rebecca and Luke pull the pots and pans out of a low cupboard. MARVIN: Quiet? Oh, they're playing very nicely. Panel 3: The twins bang pots with wooden spoons, CLANG! BONG!, and Marvin's face freezes with the phone at his ear. Panel 4: Marvin sits on the floor with a colander on his head, banging a pot with a spoon along with the delighted twins, while the phone hangs by its cord on the wall. THE PHONE: Hello? Hello?
Big version (640 x 673, 91K)
Marvin says: Hi, Mom. The twins have a sixth sense for the telephone: the minute I pick it up, the pot cupboard opens. The colander hat is mine. Rebecca has asked for one of her own, and I'm told Grandma is looking into it.

Strip #4  ·  Thursday, September 23, 1999

NAP TIME #4, Thursday 9/23/99. Panel 1: Connie comes in the front door in her white pharmacist's coat, smiling, her purse on her shoulder. CONNIE: I'm home! How was your day? Panel 2: The living room is a wreck of toys and a fort of couch cushions, and Marvin lies face down on the carpet with Rebecca and Luke sitting on his back. MARVIN: Fine. Great. No problems. A smaller balloon down by his face, muffled into the carpet: Fine. Great. Panel 3: Rebecca, sitting on Marvin's back in front of the fort, beams and pats his head. REBECCA: We built a fort! Daddy is the dragon. Panel 4: Connie lies face down on the carpet beside Marvin, still in her white coat, with Rebecca on Marvin's back and Luke on hers, both grinning. CONNIE: Is there room for two dragons?
Big version (640 x 673, 98K)
Marvin says: Connie's first strip, and the night she became a dragon. The fort is still standing as I type this, and we've been eating supper on the floor. Nobody's in a hurry to take it down.
