DAYS UNTIL GODZILLA!!! Opens Wednesday, May 20, 1998
Hi, I'm Joseph. I'm 13 and I'm in seventh grade in New Jersey. I have been a Godzilla fan since I was about five, when my dad let me stay up and watch the old Japanese movies with him on Saturday afternoons on TV. Now Hollywood made one, and in THREE DAYS I will see it. I started this countdown in March when it was 63 days. I'm going to have to find something else to do with my life on Thursday.
Who made it: Roland Emmerich directed it and Dean Devlin produced it. They wrote it together. They're the ones who made Independence Day, so you know stuff is going to get blown up.
Who's in it: Matthew Broderick plays a scientist. (Ferris Bueller vs. Godzilla!!!) Jean Reno, who my dad says is a huge star in France. Maria Pitillo. Also Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer, who do voices on The Simpsons, so that's cool.
Where: NEW YORK CITY. Godzilla is coming to Manhattan. That's practically next door. My mom says if he comes across the river she's not cleaning up after him.
How: He's mostly computer animation this time, not a guy in a suit. I have mixed feelings about this. The suit was part of it.
When: Wednesday, May 20, right before Memorial Day weekend.
This is driving me CRAZY. They are spending a billion dollars on commercials and NOT ONE OF THEM SHOWS WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE.
The first trailer came on before Men in Black last summer. There's a museum with a T. rex skeleton and then a giant foot comes down through the roof and squashes it. The whole theater went "OHHH." That's how long I've been waiting.
Now there are commercials with his foot. His tail going past a building. His eye. A shadow. That's it.
There are posters on the sides of buses and in the bus stops that compare how big he is to stuff. I'm not going to say what they say, but they're pretty funny.
My friend Jeremy says that means he looks bad and they're hiding it. I say it means he looks SO good they're saving it. We have a bet: one dollar.
The ones I've seen, best to worst. Toho has been making these since 1954. These are the names they have over here, which are different from the Japanese names sometimes.
Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (the first one) — Black and white and actually scary. Raymond Burr is a reporter. Nothing else comes close.
Destroy All Monsters — EVERY monster at once. Best final battle ever made.
Godzilla vs. the Thing — The Thing is Mothra. The tiny twins, the giant egg. Classic.
Monster Zero — Godzilla goes to another planet and does a little victory dance. I do it too when I win at Nintendo.
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla — A ROBOT GODZILLA. Need I say more.
Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster — Three heads! And Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra team up, so it's like he's kind of a good guy now.
Godzilla 1985 — Raymond Burr came back for this one. Godzilla is mean again.
King Kong vs. Godzilla — Kong is too small and looks goofy. Godzilla should have won. I don't care what anybody says.
Gigantis, the Fire Monster — It's Godzilla, but they call him Gigantis for some reason. Good fight with Anguirus.
Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster — Weirdest one. He flies by shooting his breath at the ground. My dad laughed for ten minutes.
Godzilla vs. Megalon — Jet Jaguar is pretty dumb, but the drop kick is awesome.
Son of Godzilla — Minya blows smoke rings. Cute. Not scary at all.
Godzilla's Revenge — WORST. It's a kid dreaming and it's mostly fights from the other movies.
There are newer ones from Japan in the '90s that never came out here. In the last one, from 1995, Godzilla melts down and dies. I've only read about them. If anybody has them on tape, E-MAIL ME.
My dad is taking me and Jeremy and Logan to the 7:00 show at the multiplex on Wednesday. He's leaving work early. He says it's for me but he's just as excited.
It's a school night, so I have to have ALL my homework done before we leave. I'm doing Wednesday's homework on Tuesday.
We're getting there at 6:00 to get good seats. Middle, about two-thirds back, best for sound.
I'm wearing my green Godzilla T-shirt. It's a little small now. I don't care.
My sister Rebecca is 9 and it's PG-13, so she can't come. She says she doesn't care. She cares.
Large popcorn. Real butter. This is not negotiable.
MY REVIEW: WEDNESDAY NIGHT!!!
As soon as I get home from the theater. Stars, the good parts, the bad parts (there won't be any), and if he looks right. Plus who won the bet.
