My Flare Diary
[ back to Butterfly Days ]

My rheumatologist asked me to keep track of how I feel so I don't sit in her office saying "um, I don't know, bad?" I started doing it on paper and then thought, why not put some of it here. Maybe it helps somebody see that the bad weeks end. I rate each day 1 to 10, where 10 is the best day of my life and 1 is don't-get-out-of-bed.

Here we go. Knuckles swollen, fever of 100 in the afternoon, and the rash is back a little. Called the doctor's office. She wants to see me Wednesday. Neto made dinner (hot dogs, but still).

Two weeks on prednisone for this flare. Joints are better. Face is a full moon. I went to my sister's for the Fourth a day early and sat in the shade all afternoon in my mushroom hat. Paloma brought me every plate of food so I wouldn't have to get up. That girl.

Blood work today. Doctor is starting to bring the prednisone down slowly, the way she always does. Went back to work for the first time in three weeks. Everyone at the office said I looked great. See the "please don't say" list, ha. They meant it nicely.

Good week. Tired from the heat, but the regular San Antonio in August tired, not the lupus kind. Support group Thursday. A new girl came, twenty-two years old, just diagnosed. She reminded me so much of me. I gave her this page address. Hi, Veronica, if you're reading!

Paloma started fourth grade. I walked her in on the first day like always, in my hat, with my sunscreen. Some things I refuse to miss and that's one of them.

Eight! I'll take it. Off the prednisone for now, still on my Plaquenil. We went to Mass and then out for breakfast tacos and I didn't need a nap until 4. Thank you to everybody who wrote to me this summer. There were forty-one of you. I printed every letter and I keep them in a folder by my bed for the days that only rate a 3.
