THE ARCHIVE

Every strip so far, oldest first, so you can start at 3 a.m. on the first night and read down to the morning. All four on one page come to about 120K, so if you're on a modem, go put the coffee on. Each one has a big version too, as a link.

STRIP #1: THREE A.M.
Tuesday, August 31, 1999
11 TO 7 #1, Tuesday 8/31/99. Panel 1: Kathy sits at the nurses' station, staring blankly at the clock on the wall, which says three o'clock. KATHY: It's 3 a.m. The hour when time stops. Panel 2: Beside her, Phillip gives an enormous yawn, a half-eaten sandwich in his hand. PHILLIP: Is it still Tuesday? Panel 3: Nancy, writing at the counter, looks up calmly over her reading glasses. NANCY: It's Wednesday. It has been Wednesday for three hours. Panel 4: Kathy and Phillip lie face down on the counter side by side, and the clock still says three. KATHY: Nobody told me.
Big version (640 x 673, 64K)
Kathy says: Where it all started. Phillip really asked me this, and Nancy really answered him without putting down her pen. Look at the clock in the last panel. It still says three. That isn't a mistake. At three it never moves.

STRIP #2: THE COFFEE
Tuesday, September 7, 1999
11 TO 7 #2, Tuesday 9/7/99. Panel 1: In the break room, Phillip holds up the glass pot from the coffee maker, full of something black, and stares at it. PHILLIP: Who made this coffee? Panel 2: Nancy sits at the table with her crossword and her pen and doesn't look up. NANCY: I did. At ten. Panel 3: Phillip pours, and the coffee slides out thick as syrup and runs over the side of the mug, while Kathy watches. KATHY: It's been on the burner seven hours. Panel 4: Phillip drinks straight from the pot, his eyes huge and round and his hair standing straight up. PHILLIP: I can see through time.
Big version (640 x 673, 68K)
Kathy says: Nancy comes in an hour early and makes the coffee before she takes her coat off, so by five in the morning it has been on the burner seven hours. Do the math, then don't drink it. In real life Phillip did not drink it out of the pot. He thought about it.

STRIP #3: DAY SLEEPER
Tuesday, September 14, 1999
11 TO 7 #3, Tuesday 9/14/99. Panel 1: Kathy lies in bed under the covers with a sleep mask over her eyes, and the bedroom window is covered with aluminum foil. KATHY: Sleep. Finally. Panel 2: Kathy lies rigid and wide awake under the mask as a lawn mower roars outside the wall: BRRRRRRRRRR. Panel 3: Kathy pulls her pillow down over her head as the doorbell rings: DING-DONG! Panel 4: At the front door, a smiling boy holds a box of candy bars, and Kathy stands in the doorway in her bathrobe with the sleep mask pushed up into her wild hair. BOY: Wanna buy a candy bar? KATHY: How many have you got?
Big version (640 x 673, 73K)
Kathy says: Sleeping in the daytime, a true story. The foil, the lawn mower and the doorbell all happened on the same morning. Yes, the foil on the window is real, and yes, it works better than anything I've bought at a store. And I bought the whole box.

STRIP #4: THE Q WORD
Tuesday, September 21, 1999
11 TO 7 #4, Tuesday 9/21/99. Panel 1: Seven o'clock by the clock on the wall. A cheerful young day-shift nurse with a big smile arrives at the nurses' station, while behind her the night shift stands with their backs turned. DAY NURSE: Good morning! Panel 2: Kathy, Phillip and Nancy stand in a row, hollow-eyed, with dark rings under their eyes. KATHY AND PHILLIP: Is that what morning is? Panel 3: The day nurse holds a clipboard while Kathy writes at the counter. DAY NURSE: So how was the night? Quiet? Panel 4: Kathy, Phillip and Nancy lunge toward her with their hands up to stop her, Kathy and Phillip horrified, Nancy perfectly calm. KATHY, PHILLIP AND NANCY: Don't say quiet!!
Big version (640 x 673, 65K)
Kathy says: The hand-off at seven in the morning, and the one word you never say on nights. The day nurse is real, and she really does say good morning like she means it. Watch Nancy in the last panel: hands up like the rest of us, and calm as a lake.
