Under construction on everybody's home page since 1996. He has never finished one. He has never put down the jackhammer. He has never once stopped smiling. The hardest-working GIF on the Web, and the least productive. He thinks the year 2000 is a deadline.

Put up next to somebody's links in 1997, and new ever since. Lives in fear of the day the owner updates the page and takes him down. Very sensitive about dates. Please don't ask him what year it is.

The "e-mail me!" at the bottom of the page. Nobody writes. Nobody signs the guestbook either, which isn't technically his department, but he takes it personally. Knows Cone. That's the whole list.

Six digits and an ego. Knows exactly how many people have visited and tells everybody. Has not given much thought to how many of them were the owner. Last seen at 000853 and climbing, slowly, mostly on Sunday nights.

The World Wide Web, spinning ten frames a second, one full turn every 2.4 seconds, and he hasn't stood still since he went up. Permanently dizzy. Also the only one on the page who says what he sees, which may be the dizziness talking.

Says "...". The only member of the cast who isn't animated, and the only one who seems at peace with it. Dig's oldest coworker, as far as anybody can tell. Has never promised anything to anybody.

The Owner. Whose page this is. Says it'll be finished soon. Reloads a lot.

THE SCENERY

And underconstruction.gif, which is 416 pixels wide and doesn't fit in a panel. It doesn't fit in a lot of people's tables either.
