When a line goes down, the guys scatter. You worked next to somebody for twenty years and all of a sudden you don't know if he's okay. So I started keeping track. Everybody here said it was fine to put them on, first name and last initial. If you worked with us and you're not on here, WRITE ME. We want to know how you're doing.
| Who |
Was |
Now |
| Stan W. (me) | crane, 27 yrs | truck driving school, road test in October |
| Eddie K. | roller, 31 yrs | took early retirement in March. Fishing. Says hi. |
| Ron T. | millwright, 22 yrs | working maintenance at a food plant in Monroe. Less money, but steady. |
| Luis M. | crane, 9 yrs | welding school, done in December |
| Big Al P. | shipping, 25 yrs | still waiting on the callback. Painting houses for cash. |
| Darnell J. | electrician, 14 yrs | got on with a contractor right away. Smart guy, good trade. |
| Mike S. | crane, 6 yrs | community college for nursing. Yes, nursing. His wife is one and she said he'd be good at it. He will. |
| Gene B. | roller, 29 yrs | retired. Had a rough spring. Doing better. Coaching his grandson's hockey team. |
| Tony R. | shipping, 11 yrs | HVAC school with Luis's cousin. Loves it. |
| Walt D. | crane, 19 yrs | moved to his brother's in Indiana. Called back at a mill there, then laid off again in July. Keep him in your prayers. |
| Pete O. | millwright, 17 yrs | auto parts plant in Taylor. Says it's cleaner and quieter and he misses the noise. |
| Chuck H. | shipping, 24 yrs | runs the food pantry at the hall, volunteer. Still waiting on the callback. |
That's twelve. There were a lot more of us. Some I haven't heard from, and I worry about them. If that's you, just send a line. Even "I'm okay" is plenty.
A FEW THINGS THE GUYS WANTED ME TO PASS ON
- Ron: "Your mill skills count for more than you think. Write down everything you know how to do, even the stuff that seems normal. Maintenance managers want guys who can fix anything."
- Darnell: "Get any license or certification you can while you have the time."
- Mike: "Don't let anybody tell you you're too old or too much of a mill rat to learn something new."
- Gene: "Call your buddies. Don't wait for them to call you. They're sitting home too."
- Chuck: "There's no shame in the pantry. Come get a bag."
