HOME  |  MISSIONS  |  OTHER MODES + DIRECTOR

When you need a break from the story (like when New York is making you crazy), Driver has a bunch of other stuff to do. Here's all of it, with my best tip for each and how hard I think it is.

MODE WHAT IT IS + MY TIP
TAKE A RIDE
Hard: 0/5
Just drive around the city. No mission, no timer. This is where I learned the streets, and where I go to do jumps in San Francisco. Tip: find a hill and see how far you can fly. My record is most of a block.
PURSUIT
Hard: 3/5
You chase another car and ram it until it's wrecked. Tip: hit it from the side or the back corner, not straight on. A straight hit hurts you as much as him.
GETAWAY
Hard: 3/5
The cops are already on your tail when it starts. Lose them. Tip: lots of turns, alleys, and never drive in a straight line for long.
CROSS TOWN CHECKPOINT
Hard: 3/5
Race back and forth across town hitting checkpoints. Tip: the shortest way isn't always the fastest. Wide streets beat crooked shortcuts.
TRAIL BLAZER
Hard: 2/5
You start with only a few seconds on the clock and drive through trail markers to get more time. Tip: look ahead for the next marker while you're still going through the one in front of you.
SURVIVAL
Hard: 6/5 (no joke)
You against every cop in the city, and they just want to smash you. Stay alive as long as you can. Tip: keep moving and let them crash into each other. My best is a little over two minutes. Isaiah says he's done four. Again, no witnesses.
DIRT TRACK
Hard: 2/5
Laps around a dirt track. Slidey. Tip: start your turns early and use less handbrake than you think. The dirt does half the sliding for you.

DIRECTOR MODE

This is the coolest thing about Driver and nobody talks about it enough. After you drive, you can watch the replay, and in the Film Director you can make it into a real movie. You pick where the cameras go and when it cuts from one to the next, so you can have a camera chasing right behind the car, then switch to one sitting on the corner as you fly past, then one up high looking down. It looks just like a car chase on TV.

It takes forever to get one right. I spend more time making movies than driving sometimes. Here are my best ones so far:

"THE BIG JUMP"
San Francisco, Take a Ride. Me going down the steepest hill I could find and launching off the next one. Camera behind the car going up, then it cuts to a camera at the bottom looking up as the car flies over, then one from the side when it lands and sparks come off. 40 seconds long. My dad watched it twice and said "huh." That is a lot, for my dad.

"COP SANDWICH"
Survival mode. Two cop cars come at me from opposite directions, I hit the handbrake and spin out of the way, and they smash right into each other. It happened by accident. Then I spent an hour putting cameras on it so it looks like I planned it.

"MIAMI NICE"
A getaway in Miami with cameras on every corner, so it cuts every couple of seconds like a real movie. I lose the cops at the end by going down an alley and they go straight past. Seven cuts. My masterpiece.

"TANNER 500"
Dirt Track. I put a low camera on the inside of the last turn, so every lap the car comes sliding right at you, sideways, throwing dirt. Isaiah watched it and said it looks like the real race on TV. Then he said his would be better. He doesn't have one.

I wish I could put them on here so you could see them, but they're on my memory card and there's no way to get them on the computer. If you have a PlayStation and you live near me, bring your memory card over. JK, I can't say where I live on the Internet. My mom checks this page.
