Carrie keeps every score sheet, and these numbers come straight out of her binder, so if there's a mistake it's mine for typing it
in, not hers. Places are out of the number of teams that cooked that category, which isn't always every team at the contest. A dash
means we didn't win money in it.

The best weekend of our lives. Charlie's ribs. Two judges wrote "perfect bite" on the sheet. Carrie had
them laminated.

The night it rained (see the front page). This one only paid the top three. The hog

Still 91 degrees at 9 p.m. The hog came off beautiful. Dad got his picture in the local paper standing next to it, and he

Last weekend. Solid all around. The hog was a little dry, and we know exactly why: I opened the door too many times.

Carrie says that's our best year yet, and she's right: in 1998 we were $2,040 in the hole, and in 1997 we didn't
keep track, which she says is "how men do it." Nobody gets into this to make money. You get into it for the 3 a.m. coffee by the
firebox, and the people at the next site who lend you a pair of tongs, and the sound of your team's name over the loudspeaker.
