Howdy, and welcome to our square!
We're Bud and Loretta Shrum, and this year we are the club's Publicity Couple, which means we make the
flyers, call the newspaper, and now we have this Web page too! The nice young man at the computer store
got us hooked up to the Internet, and Bud and I have been figuring out the rest with a book from the
library. We've been square dancing since 1981, when a couple from church dragged us to lessons and Bud
said he would go ONE night. That was eighteen years ago, and he has more badges on his vest than I do.
Square dancing is the best exercise you'll ever get without noticing. You'll laugh more than you have
in years, and every person in that hall is a friend by the end of the night. If you've never tried it,
this fall is your chance. Read on!
NEW DANCER LESSONS!
Tuesday nights, 7:00 to 9:00, at the American Legion hall.
Our new class started Tuesday, September 14, and you can still join through October 5. Our club
angels will catch you up. (An "angel" is an experienced dancer who comes to lessons to help new
folks, and we have more angels than we have students, so you will never stand alone!)
♥ First two nights FREE, then $4 per person each night
♥ Come as a couple, or come single. We'll find you a partner
♥ Casual clothes are fine for lessons. Wear shoes with smooth soles, not sneakers that grab the floor
♥ Ages 10 and up with a parent dancing too
♥ Graduation will be in April, and then you're a Mainstream dancer!
In the first few weeks you'll learn Circle Left, Forward and Back, Do Sa Do, Swing, Promenade, Allemande
Left, Right and Left Grand, Ladies Chain, Pass Thru and Square Thru. By Halloween you'll be dancing to
whole singing calls. I promise.

Club Dances
First and third Saturdays, 7:30 to 10:00 p.m., American Legion hall. Our club caller is Dewey Vance
and our round dance cuer is Marge Tillery. We alternate Mainstream and Plus tips, with rounds in between.
$10 per couple. Visiting dancers are always welcome, and so is your banner if you're brave enough (see
below). Proper square dance attire, please: ladies in skirts and petticoats, gentlemen in long-sleeved
shirts.
| Date |
Dance |
| Sat., Oct. 2 | Regular club dance. Ice cream social at the break. |
| Sat., Oct. 16 | HARVEST HOEDOWN! Guest caller from Kentucky, Mr. Lyle Hammond. Chili supper at 6:00, $3 a bowl. Wear your fall colors. |
| Sat., Oct. 30 | Fifth Saturday Halloween Costume Dance. Prizes for best couple costume. Bud is going as a scarecrow again because the costume still fits. |
| Sat., Nov. 6 & 20 | Regular club dances. The 20th is our canned food night for the food pantry. |
| Fri., Dec. 31 | Y2K NEW YEAR'S EVE DANCE. Potluck at 8:00. We'll square up at 11:30 and promenade right into 2000. If the lights go out at midnight, Dewey says he can call without a microphone. We believe him. |
Banner News
For those who don't know the custom: when a club visits another club's dance with enough dancers, they
get to take home that club's banner. The only way to get it back is to visit their dance with at least
as many squares. On Saturday, September 11, three full squares of Promenaders drove down and brought
home the banner of the Walking Horse Whirlers! It is hanging behind Dewey's speaker as I type.
Whirlers, we will leave the porch light on for you. Everybody who went earned their Banner Raider
fun badge, and Bud has already sewn his on.
Square Dance Words for New Folks
| Square | Four couples facing the middle, one on each side. Couple one has their backs to the caller. |
| Tip | One round of dancing: a patter call, then a singing call. Then you sit down and catch your breath. |
| Patter call | The caller makes it up as he goes, over a lively tune, to see if he can mix you up. He usually can. |
| Singing call | The caller sings the calls to a song you'll probably know, and you get your own partner back at the end. |
| Rounds | Couple dances in a big circle between the tips: two-steps, waltzes, cha-chas. The cuer tells you the steps. |
| Yellow Rock | A hug! You'll get lots. |
| Plus | The next program after Mainstream, with calls like Relay the Deucey, Load the Boat and Teacup Chain. Don't worry about those yet. Bud still gets lost in Teacup Chain and he's been dancing Plus since 1984. |
