Our fall show last year drew 287 horticulture entries from 31 exhibitors, plus
46 arrangements, and about 350 visitors signed the guest book, the most we've ever had for
a fall show. The three judges came to us from rose societies in neighboring counties and were
generous with their comments. Thank you to everyone who entered, clerked, poured coffee, carried
tables and swept up petals. Congratulations to our winners!

Sweepstakes
Most blue ribbons in horticulture: Thomas Christenson, with eleven. That is three
years running, Tom. Some of us are starting to wonder what you feed them. (He says bananas. He
won't say what he does with the bananas.)
What the Judges Told Us
The judges went over the tables with us afterward, and these are the comments we heard most
often. They're worth remembering for this year's show:
- An exhibition hybrid tea should be one-half to three-quarters open, with a high pointed center.
A bloom that opened in the car on the way over can go in the open-bloom class instead.
- Foliage counts. Clean, green, unchewed leaves all the way up the stem. (Several lovely blooms
lost points to black spot this year. I am not saying anything. I am just saying.)
- Stems should be straight and in proportion to the bloom.
- Check the name on your tag. Two entries were disqualified for being in the wrong class.
- Groom gently. A judge can always tell when you've pulled off half the outer petals.
And for the record: your newsletter editor took two blue ribbons ('Pristine' and 'Rise 'n'
Shine'), a red for 'Double Delight', and an honorable mention for an 'Iceberg' spray that the
judges kindly called "charming." No royalty. There's always this year.
