My REAL Hamsters!
(they don't dance but they are still the best)

My scanner is my dad's and it's broken right now (Evan spilled Kool-Aid in it, THANKS EVAN) so no pictures yet. But I can describe them really good.

Peanut Butter
Kind: Syrian hamster, golden, long-haired (the pet store called it a "teddy bear" hamster)
Boy or girl: boy
Birthday: we don't know, we got him in October 1998 so we say October 12th
Favorite food: a sunflower seed, or a little piece of carrot
Favorite thing: stuffing his cheeks till his head is twice as big and then walking away like nothing happened

Peanut Butter is the one that looks like Goldie on my front page, except fluffier. He sleeps all day in his little wooden house and then at night he runs on his wheel like he's late for something. His old wheel squeaked so loud my mom could hear it in her room, so for my birthday I asked for a quiet one, which is probably the most boring birthday present ever, but it worked.

Pickles
Kind: Winter White dwarf hamster
Boy or girl: girl
Got her: June 1999, for getting all A's and B's
Favorite food: hamster mix, she picks out all the green bits first
Favorite thing: sitting in my hand and washing her face

Pickles is grey and white with a dark stripe down her back, like Spinner on my front page. She is SO tiny, like the size of a walnut with fur. Winter Whites can turn almost all white in the winter when the days get short. I really hope she does it so I can see!

Why They Have Separate Cages

People always ask me why Peanut Butter and Pickles don't live together so they can be friends. It's because Syrian hamsters like to live ALONE once they are grown up. If you put two grown-up Syrians in one cage they will fight, and they can really hurt each other. And a big Syrian and a little dwarf together is a really bad idea. So they each have their own house and they're happy. They are kind of like my brother and me.

Kelsey's Hamster Tips

  • Hamsters are awake at night, so don't keep one in your room if you're a light sleeper. (Or get the quiet wheel.)
  • Don't wake them up in the day by poking them. You wouldn't like it either. Some hamsters bite if you scare them.
  • Give them lots of bedding so they can dig and hide stuff.
  • Little bits of carrot or apple are good treats, but not too much. NO chocolate, candy, or onion. Ask the pet store or a vet if you're not sure about a food.
  • Wash your hands before and after you hold them.
  • Hamsters only live about two or three years, so love them a LOT while you have them.

That last one makes me sad so here is a dancing hamster to fix it:
