Readers' Letters to The Great Debate
<< Back to the Ten Rounds

We get a lot of mail. Most of it is just votes, but some of you write whole essays, and a few of you have taken this more seriously than we do. Here are some of the best, printed with permission. Dog people on the left in blue, cat people on the right in red, like a wedding.

FOR THE DOGS FOR THE CATS

I have had collies my whole life, seven of them, and every one of them walked me to the bus stop and was waiting there when I got home. I am 71 years old and I still miss the first one. Dogs, all ten rounds, and I don't need to read them.
Rita, San Antonio, Texas

Jeannie says: Rita, I can't argue with seven collies. I won't even try.

I've carried mail for twenty-two years. I have been barked at, chased, and once sat on by a Saint Bernard. I vote dogs anyway. Tell Tank the mail carrier loves him too, he just wishes Tank would use his inside voice.
Michael, Dayton, Ohio

Ricardo says: Michael, you're a bigger man than I am. Tank says sorry. He doesn't mean it.

I'm a freshman in college and they don't let you have pets in the dorm. My mom says our dog Biscuit sits on my bed every night waiting for me. I'm voting dogs on every round and I'm not even sorry.
Kyle, Lubbock, Texas

Ricardo says: Go call your mom, Kyle. Put Biscuit on the phone.

Firefighter, 14 years. Our station had a mutt named Hydrant who rode on the engine to every call for nine years. Never once did a cat volunteer for that. Dogs, Round 1, by a knockout.
Ken, Spokane, Washington

Jeannie says: Ken, cats are smart enough to stay home when there's a fire. That's Round 8.

Round 9 isn't even fair. My cat has never once met me at the door. My dog meets me at the door when I've only gone out to get the newspaper.
Justin, Buffalo, New York

I live in a one-bedroom apartment and work ten-hour days. A dog would be miserable. My two cats are perfectly happy to sleep all day and keep me company all night. Some of us don't have a backyard, Ricardo. Cats on Cost, Noise and Vacations.
Diana, Sacramento, California

Ricardo says: That's fair, Diana. I've seen apartment boxers. It's not pretty.

Thirty-four years teaching third grade, and when I came home I wanted QUIET. I got it from three cats. Noise round, Cats, and please give Gordo his breakfast at a decent hour.
Wendy, Tucson, Arizona

Round 10?! Ricardo, a cold night is when it's twenty below and the car won't start. Come up here in January and then we'll talk about who keeps who warm. For the record, my cat sleeps under the covers with me all winter and she's never once taken up the whole bed.
Jeanine, Duluth, Minnesota

Ricardo says: Jeanine, I looked up Duluth in January. I'm staying in Corpus.

My husband passed two years ago, and my cat Pepper has slept on his side of the bed every night since. She doesn't wiggle at the door, but she is always there. Cats for loyalty. I know I'm outvoted on that one.
Wanda, Macon, Georgia

Jeannie says: Wanda, you made me cry at the kitchen table. Ricardo too, but he says it was the onions.

AND FROM THE FAMILY

Ricardo's mother in Kingsville would like everyone to know that Tank is her favorite grandchild, "until there are real ones," and that she votes Dogs on all ten rounds.

Jeannie's sister voted Cats on all ten rounds without reading them and says she'll keep doing it until Ricardo apologizes for something he said at Thanksgiving in 1995. He knows what it was.

Aunt Sylvia sent in forty-one votes for Dogs in one week from three different e-mail addresses. We counted one. Nice try, Aunt Sylvia.
