a candle for Nugget

Hi!! My name is Caleb and I am 10 years old. This is a page about my hamster Nugget who died this summer. I made it myself on our computer. My mom helped me with the hard parts like the table and she checked my spelling but I did all the writing.

IF YOU CAME HERE LOOKING FOR THE HAMPSTER DANCE, this is not it, sorry! A lot of people find my page that way because it says hamster. That page is funny but this page is about a real hamster. You can stay and read about him if you want. He was a really good hamster.

All About Nugget
What kind: Golden hamster. That's the same thing as a Syrian hamster. They are the big kind.
Color: Gold on top and white on his tummy, like a chicken nugget with ranch. That's how he got his name. My dad thought of it.
Boy or girl: Boy
Came home: April 1997 for my 8th birthday. From the pet store at the mall.
Favorite food: Sunflower seeds, then broccoli, then little bits of apple. He did NOT like carrots. He would carry them around and then hide them under his bedding.
Favorite toy: His wheel. Also toilet paper tubes. He would chew them into confetti.
Record: 14 sunflower seeds in his cheeks at one time. I counted when he put them back out in his corner.
Worst habit: Chewing on the cage bars at like 2 in the morning. Clink clink clink.

Funny Stuff Nugget Did
  • The Great Escape #1. He got out of his cage because my little sister Hannah didn't close the door all the way. We looked for him for TWO DAYS. My dad found him asleep in his slipper in the closet. My dad almost put his foot in. He yelled really loud.
  • The Great Escape #2. This time he was behind the washing machine. Mom put a sunflower seed trail on the floor and he came out and followed it like a video game.
  • Hamster Ball Races. I would put him in his clear ball and he would roll down the hall. Our cat Pickles would watch him go by but she never did anything. I think she was scared of him. He was only scared of the vacuum.
  • The Cheek Thing. When his cheeks were full his head looked twice as big. Hamsters have pouches in their cheeks so they can carry food home. Then he would push it all out in his corner and sit there like he was rich.
  • Washing. He washed his face with both paws like a person. He did it every time I held him, like he had to get my smell off.

The Saddest Day

It was Thursday, July 22. When I got up his wheel wasn't going and he was in his nest and he didn't wake up. He was already gone. My mom said he probably just went to sleep and didn't wake up and it didn't hurt. She said two and a half is really old for a hamster and that I took really good care of him and that is why he lived so long.

I cried a lot. My dad stayed home from work late that morning. We put Nugget in a little box with his favorite toilet paper tube and some sunflower seeds so he would have a snack. We buried him in the back yard under the lilac bush. Hannah painted a rock that says NUGGET and it has a yellow sun on it. She is 6 so the letters are kind of big but it looks good.

My grandma sent me a card with the Rainbow Bridge poem in it. I'm not going to type it here because somebody else wrote it but it is about how pets wait for you in a nice place with lots of food and sunshine until you come. I hope Nugget has a really big wheel there.

A Poem for Nugget
by Caleb

Nugget, Nugget, gold and small,
you ran all night and never went at all.
You stuffed your cheeks and hid your treats,
you washed your face with your tiny feet.

You slept all day when I was at school,
you ran all night and that was cool.
Now your wheel is quiet in my room,
but I think you're running on the moon.

If there is a hamster heaven I know,
you've got the most seeds of anyone there. So,
save one for me, OK? Save two.
Nugget, Nugget, I love you.

(My teacher from last year said poems don't have to rhyme every time. So that one part doesn't.)

Things I Learned About Hamsters
(in case you are getting one)
  1. They sleep in the day and wake up at night. So don't put the cage in your room if you are a light sleeper. I am not.
  2. Golden hamsters have to live by themselves. If you put two grown ups together they fight. Nugget did not need a friend, he had me.
  3. Get aspen shavings, not cedar. The lady at the pet store told us cedar isn't good for their breathing.
  4. They NEED a wheel. Oil it or it squeaks. Ask a grown up.
  5. Pick them up with two hands like a cup. Don't grab them from the top, they think you are a bird that wants to eat them.
  6. Don't give them junk food or candy. Seeds and hamster food and a little bit of vegetables is good.
  7. They don't live very long. Maybe two or three years. So be really nice to them the whole time.

a hamster HAMSTER HEAVEN
Lots of people e-mailed me about their hamsters that died too. So I made a page for all of them. Every hamster gets a candle. Gerbils and guinea pigs are allowed too. Click here to see them all!

Pictures?
We have a whole roll of pictures of Nugget but we don't have a scanner. My uncle has one and he said he would do it at Thanksgiving. So check back then!!

P.S. Mom says maybe I can get a new hamster for Christmas. If I do I am going to name him Tater Tot. He will not be the same as Nugget but that's OK. Nobody could be.
