Pig People
back to Waldo's page

When we put Waldo's page up in July, we thought maybe our families would look at it. Instead we started getting e-mail from people all over the country who'd had a pig too, a lot of them from the same craze we bought Waldo in, and a lot of them who'd never been able to tell anybody else about it without getting laughed at. So this page is for them. Every pig gets a candle.

If you'd like your pig here, write to us with the pig's name, the years, your name and your city, and one thing you want people to know. We'll add it as soon as we can. (Living pigs are welcome on the second list at the bottom!)

a candle Hamlet, 1989–1998
from Kenneth McCardle, Spokane, Washington
He slept in a dog bed by the woodstove every winter of his life and growled at the mailman, the only pig I ever heard of who did. My wife says I loved him more than the dog. I won't say.
a candle Petunia, 1990–1997
from Claudia Sneed, Tulsa, Oklahoma
Bought for my college apartment, which in hindsight was a bad idea. She outlived the apartment, two roommates and a boyfriend, and came with me to my first real house.
a candle Big Ed, 1991–1999
from Therese Ashmore, Fresno, California
Big Ed could open the sliding glass door, the pantry, and my purse. He was the gentlest animal with my grandchildren I have ever seen. He died in March and the grandkids still ask for him.
a candle Truffles, 1988–1999
from Pearl Terhune, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Eleven years. She would lie on the porch in the evening and watch the sun go down over the mountains with me. I don't care how that sounds. She did.
a candle Wilbur, 1990–1996
from Thomas Waggoner, Omaha, Nebraska
Yes, Wilbur. My daughter named him, and she was eight, and you try telling an eight-year-old she can't name her pig Wilbur. He was a wonderful pig, and he knew it.
a candle Rosie, 1991–1998
from Cheri Barton, Knoxville, Tennessee
Rosie came to us from a sanctuary in 1993, after her first family gave her up. She was scared of men and brooms for a year. By the end she would fall asleep with her head in my husband's lap.
a candle Sir Francis, 1990–1999
from Doris Cosby, Lubbock, Texas
Full name Sir Francis Bacon, which my late husband thought was the funniest thing he ever said. Francis outlived him by four years and kept me company. I'm glad I had him.
a candle Tank, 1992–1999
from Carolyn Nowakowski, Columbus, Ohio
Litter-trained in a week, smarter than my brother, and afraid of the vacuum cleaner until the day he died. We buried him with his blue ball.
a candle Miss Pearl, 1989–1997
from Julia Straka, Tacoma, Washington
Miss Pearl went to the nursing home with me once a month for six years. The residents saved their apple slices for her. Some of them talked to her when they didn't talk to anybody else.
a candle Elvis, 1991–1999
from Carolyn Whitehouse, Reno, Nevada
Our second pig, after Priscilla. He sang, sort of, when he was happy, a low grunting noise that went up at the end. The house is too quiet now. Patricia and Dave, I know exactly what you mean.

Still Rooting
Pigs who are alive and well and tearing up somebody's yard as we speak. No candles needed. Give them a scratch behind the ears from us.
  • Babe, born 1996, named after the movie, of course, and the reason Jennie Wilson of Sacramento, California, can no longer have a lawn.
  • Priscilla, born 1989 and going strong at ten, still living with Carolyn in Reno (see Elvis above).
  • Clementine, born 1995, adopted from a sanctuary last year by Claudia in Tulsa, who decided she was ready for another one.
