THE DAILY SURF REPORT
Call (555) 555-0147 and press 1 any time, day or night, for the recorded report. Manny updates it every morning at 6:00 a.m. after he checks the beach himself, and again around noon if things change. The report gives you wave height, wind, tide times, water temperature and the honest word on whether it's worth getting out of bed. We have been doing this since 1994 and it's the most popular thing about the shop. Press 2 for shop hours and directions. Press 0 to talk to the shop during business hours. Why isn't the report on this page? Because the page gets updated once a month and the surf changes every hour. Call the number. It's free. The same number gets you the shop. |
|
Welcome to Beachside Surf Shop's home page! We're a small, family-run shop on the boardwalk by the
pier, and we've been here since 1991. Whether you've been surfing for thirty years or you've never
touched a board, we have what you need to get in the water, and we'll be straight with you about
what you need and what you don't.
This page is mostly for folks planning a trip to the beach who want to know what to expect before they get here: how much is a rental, how do lessons work, what's in stock. If you have a question the page doesn't answer, e-mail us or call. We're at the shop seven days a week. |
| Rentals |
A day is sunup to closing. Leash and wax are included with every board. We take a driver's license or a credit card imprint as a deposit and give it back when the board comes back in one piece. Rentals go out first come, first served -- on summer weekends and holidays the soft-tops are gone by 9 a.m., so come early or call ahead the day before and we'll set one aside. If you've never surfed: rent the soft-top. It's wide, it floats like a dock, and it won't hurt you when it hits you (and it will hit you). Don't rent the shortboard because it looks cool. It does look cool. You will not stand up on it. Water temperature: it drops fast after Labor Day. From now until about May, you want a full wetsuit, not a spring suit. The report tells you the water temp every morning. |
| Beginner Lessons |
|
$45 per person, two hours, group lesson. Board, wetsuit and leash included -- you show up in a
swimsuit with a towel and sunscreen and we do the rest.
Groups are six people at most so everybody gets attention. Lessons go out every morning at 9:00 a.m. (the wind is usually calmest then) and on summer weekends there's a second group at 1:00 p.m. You'll spend about half an hour on the sand learning how to lie on the board, paddle, and pop up, and then the rest of the time in the whitewater actually doing it. Most people stand up on their first day. Not everyone stands up for long. That's day two. Minimum age is 8, and kids under 12 need a parent on the beach. You have to be able to swim. We don't go out when the report says it's too big or the rip is running; if we cancel, you get your money back or another day, your choice. To book: call the shop or stop in the day before. Weekends fill up a week ahead in July and August. Fall is honestly the best time to learn -- smaller crowds, the water's still warm enough in September and early October, and the waves are cleaner. Right now is the good stuff. We also do private lessons and lessons for groups (birthday parties, scout troops, company outings). Ask. |
| What We Carry |
|
Boards. New shortboards, funboards and longboards from a handful of shapers we trust, plus a
rack of used boards that changes every week. The used rack is where most first boards come from
and Manny will tell you honestly which ones are worth it. We also take boards on consignment.
Wetsuits. Full suits, spring suits, vests, jackets, booties, gloves and hoods, in men's, women's and kids' sizes. Try them on. A wetsuit that fits wrong is a wetsuit you won't wear. The little stuff. Wax (cold water and warm water -- we'll tell you which), wax combs, leashes, fins and fin keys, traction pads, board bags, rack straps, ding repair kits, rash guards, sunscreen, earplugs, hats, T-shirts with our logo (the pelican) that people seem to like. Bodyboards and skimboards for the kids and the people who know bodyboarding is a real thing (it is -- see Bodyboarding Basics). What we don't carry: boogie boards from the drugstore, anything we wouldn't ride ourselves. |
| Ding Repair |
| Dings get fixed in the back room. Small dings (a crack, a pressure ding that's taking water) are usually ready in two or three days, $15 and up. Broken fins, snapped noses and buckled boards take longer and we'll quote you before we start. Bring it in dry -- a board that's been soaking up water has to sit and drain before anybody can fix it, so if you ding it, get it out of the water and get it to us. Don't tape it and keep surfing. We see that one a lot. |
| Hours & Where We Are |
|
Memorial Day through Labor Day: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. September through May: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. (We're open now on the fall schedule.) Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If the surf's really good, the door might be locked for an hour in the morning with a sign on it. You'd do the same. We're on the boardwalk right beside the pier -- the shop with the yellow awning and the surfboard rack out front. Public parking is in the lot at the foot of the pier. The rental boards are out back; walk around the side. Phone: (555) 555-0147 (press 1 for the surf report). E-mail: [email protected] |
| About Manny |
|
Manny Cruz opened Beachside in the spring of 1991 in what used to be a bait shop (the smell was gone
by '93). He's been surfing this break since he was nine and teaching people to surf since before the
shop existed, when it was just him and a couple of soft-tops in the back of a pickup. He does the surf
report every morning himself, in person, standing on the pier with a cup of coffee, because he doesn't
trust anybody else's eyes. He's usually in the shop or in the water within sight of it. Say hi. Ask
him anything about the break. Ask him about the winter of '83 if you've got a while.
The shop is a family business and the whole family pitches in, especially in summer. We're not big, we're not fancy, and we don't want to be. We just want you to get in the water and have a good time and come back. |
