WIND LOG, SUMMER 1999
Every day I drove out to the Gorge, sailed or not

<< Back to Nuking at the Gorge  |  Learning to Windsurf: The Honest Version

I keep this in a notebook in the glove box and type it up on Sunday nights. Wind is my best guess in miles an hour for the afternoon, from the forecast, the flags and how hard my arms worked. "Big" and "little" are my two boards (see my quiver). Gray rows are days I didn't sail, because the skunked days are part of it too. I work four ten-hour days, so I usually get Fridays off, which is the only reason my boss and I are still friends.

Date Where Wind Rig How it went
Sat 5/29Event Site18-225.5 / bigOpening day! The water is freezing. Fell on my first jibe, my second jibe and my third jibe. Made the fourth. Winter legs.
Sun 5/30Event Site20-255.0 / bigMuch better. Andrea's first day back too. Sailed until six and ate burgers on the grass.
Mon 5/31Event Site5-10no sailMemorial Day. Sat on the grass from 11 to 3 and the wind never came. Went for a hike up the hill instead. Not a total loss.
Fri 6/4Event Site25-304.5 / littleFirst little-board day of the year. Water started on the first try and was so proud of myself I fell off right away.
Sat 6/5--no sailRain in Portland, no wind in the Gorge. Stayed home and replaced my harness lines.
Sat 6/12Event Site20-245.0 / bigJibe practice all afternoon, back and forth in front of the grass. 4 out of 10.
Sun 6/13Event Site22-284.5 / littleGusty. Got launched over the front of the board twice. I have a bruise on my shin the shape of Ohio.
Fri 6/18Hatchery26-304.5 / littleFirst Hatchery day of the year. Watched for an hour, then went out. Big swell. Stayed close to Kerry.
Sat 6/19Event Site20-255.0 / bigKerry's birthday. We sailed, then she made us all eat cake at the picnic table in our wetsuits.
Sat 6/26Event Site25-304.5 / littleWORST DAY. Downhaul line broke halfway across. Got clear of the channel, took the rig apart in the water, rolled the sail on the boom and paddled 40 minutes to the Oregon shore, a long way west of the Event Site. Andrea and Kerry walked the bank to meet me. New line that night, plus a spare.
Sun 6/27--no sailStayed home. Put the spare downhaul in my gear bag, where it now lives forever. Sat on the couch and felt sorry for myself.
Fri 7/2Event Site22-265.0 / bigBack on the horse. Every time I got to the middle of the river I looked at my downhaul.
Sat 7/3Event Site25-304.5 / littleHoliday crowd. Took twenty minutes to find a spot on the grass to rig. Great wind, though.
Sun 7/4Hatchery28-334.0 / littleNuking! The Fourth of July, and the wind brought its own fireworks. 6 out of 10 jibes.
Mon 7/5Event Site15-185.5 / bigLight and lovely. Spent an hour in the beginner cove helping a nervous woman from Ohio learn to pull her sail up. Remembered 1994 very clearly.
Fri 7/9--no sailHad to work a Friday. Andrea called from the beach at four to tell me it was nuking. Thanks, Andrea.
Sat 7/10Event Site24-284.5 / littleMade up for Friday.
Sun 7/11Event Site20-245.0 / big7 out of 10 jibes! First time ever over half. Told everybody on the grass whether they wanted to hear it or not.
Sat 7/17Hatchery26-304.5 / littleSmall jumps off the swell. Landed flat every time, which is not how it's supposed to work, but I landed.
Sun 7/18Event Site10-15no sailDrove out, too light for me. Read a whole paperback on the grass.
Fri 7/23Hatchery28-324.5 / littleBEST DAY. Big swell, steady wind, and everything worked. Ten jibes in a row without falling. First real air off the top of a swell. Sat in the car afterward grinning like an idiot.
Sat 7/24Hatchery25-304.5 / littleTried to do it all again. Did not. Fell in about thirty times. The river keeps you humble.
Sun 7/25--no sailRest day. My forearms insisted.
Sat 7/31Event Site18-225.5 / bigLight. Just cruised back and forth. Nice to sail without trying to prove anything.
Sun 8/1Event Site22-265.0 / bigKerry let me try her new sail. I want one. My credit card says no.
Fri 8/6Event Site25-304.5 / littleHot! First short-sleeve wetsuit day.
Sat 8/7Hatchery30-354.0 / littleNuking for real. Two hours was all I had in me, and I spent part of that sitting on the board catching my breath.
Sun 8/8--no sailToo sore from Saturday. Took my own advice for once and stayed home with an ice pack.
Fri 8/13Event Site24-284.5 / littleFriday the 13th. Broke a fin on a rock coming in. Of course I did.
Sat 8/14--no sailA friend's wedding in Salem. I wore a sleeveless dress over a wetsuit tan. The photographer was very patient.
Fri 8/20Event Site5-12no sailDrove out after a half day at the clinic. Glassy river, zero wind. Ate huckleberry ice cream and drove home.
Sat 8/21Hatchery27-324.5 / littleBack to the Hatchery. Made all my jibes on the big swells and fell on the easy ones. Explain that.
Sun 8/22Event Site8-12no sailFlat. We all sat around and talked about yesterday.
Sun 8/29Event Site18-225.5 / bigTook Andrea's little sister out in the cove. She's a natural, which I'm trying not to resent.
Fri 9/3--no sailWorked. Everybody wants their knee looked at before the long weekend.
Sat 9/4Hatchery28-334.0 / littleLabor Day weekend. Nuking. Huge swell. I got scared once, came in, sat for a while, went back out. That counts as growth.
Sun 9/5Event Site25-304.5 / littlePacked beach, everybody squeezing in one more weekend. Good wind all afternoon.
Mon 9/6Event Site20-245.0 / bigLast day of the season for me. 8 out of 10 jibes. Sat on the grass until the sun went down behind the hills, then drove home slow.

See you next Memorial Day, river.
