Hawk Watch Home | Notes on the Days | Hawk ID for Beginners

Here is every bird we counted in September, day by day, as the lead counters reported them to me. Counts run 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. unless noted. A zero means we looked hard and didn't see one. Below the table are the totals, with the second half of August added in and last year's numbers for the same dates.

Notes on the Days

DateWhat happened
Sept. 4Labor Day weekend crowd of about sixty, and a merlin to show them. Gary had to give the "please lower your voices" talk twice.
Sept. 6Labor Day. Hot, hazy and a south wind, which is the worst. Twenty-two birds all day.
Sept. 10-12A cold front and three good days in a row. First real kettles of broad-wings on the 11th, and our first peregrine.
Sept. 13-15South winds and haze while Floyd came up the coast. On the 15th the clouds thickened all morning, and William stayed until 1:00 and then came down ahead of the rain.
Sept. 16Floyd. Rain all day and all night. No count.
Sept. 17Clearing and windy behind the storm. Gary counted 1,366 broad-wings alone until his wife came up at noon to help, and he says she saved his thumb.
Sept. 18THE BIG DAY. 4,212 broad-wings, 4,364 birds in all. Northwest wind 10 to 15, clear, 61 degrees at noon. Best hour 12-1 with 1,630 birds. See the home page.
Sept. 19Nearly a thousand more broad-wings. Rita and Lori said their necks hurt. Nobody felt sorry for them.
Sept. 22Low clouds on the ridge until 11. William counted from 11 to 4.
Sept. 23-26The sharpies have arrived. 72 on the 25th, our best so far. Kestrels coming steadily, and a merlin chased a sharp-shinned past the rocks on the 24th, which got everybody up off their cushions.
