THE BUG
The Y2K bug himself. Round, green, six legs, two antennae, very big eyes and very big plans.
At midnight on New Year's Eve he is going to make the clock say 1900, and after that, he says,
chaos. He practices his line in the mirror. He jumps at loud noises. For something the whole
world is supposed to be afraid of, he worries an awful lot, and I like him for it.
Lives: on the motherboard, wherever he can see Clock.
First strip: #1
CLOCK
The computer's system clock. A small black box with a red display that says 1999, and eyelids
that have never once gone all the way up. He runs on the little coin battery on the motherboard,
so he's awake even when the computer is off. He has never missed a thing, including every
game of solitaire I've ever lost on this machine. He has
changed his numbers every second since 1994 and he isn't about to get excited about one more.
The Bug is his best friend. Clock has not said so.
Lives: by the battery.
First strip: #1
FLOPPY
A 3.5-inch floppy disk, 1.44 megs, navy blue, with a silver shutter and his face on the label.
He's older than the computer and he'll tell you about it. Back in '92 he caught a virus in a
school computer lab, and he still has the bad sector to show for it, with a bandage on it.
Cranky, proud, and a little bit right about most things. Snores.
Lives: wherever he wants. He's earned it.
First strip: #4
NINES
The Bug's cousin from out of town. Same shape as the Bug, purple, with a big 9 on his belly
and a little brown suitcase he never puts down. His big day was 9/9/99. It went about as well
as you'd think. He says he'll be back for New Year's to watch his cousin, which is very supportive
of him, and also the opposite.
Lives: out of his suitcase.
First strip: #2 (the bonus strip)
CORY
That's me. In the strip I'm the big face on the other side of the monitor glass, the guy who
owns the computer, plays a lot of solitaire on it, and goes online with a very loud modem. In
real life I'm 24 and I work the counter at a used computer store in Dayton, Ohio. My face is the
one color in the strip that isn't in Paint's color box. I had to mix it myself. It took longer
than the rest of the strip.
Lives: on the other side of the glass.
