PAST LANs
eighteen Saturdays, written down so nobody can remember it differently
[ back to GARAGE LAN ]

Every LAN has one main event at 8 p.m. The winner gets his handle on the whiteboard, where it stays until the next one, and a slice of the last pizza whether he wants it or not. Everything else that night is just playing.

The frag tables are copied off the server's scoreboard at the end of the map, by hand, by me. If your number's wrong, it was wrong on the screen.

Sixteen seats, sixteen green lights by 3:10, which is a record. Meatwagon ran the new cables along the wall this time instead of across the floor, and nobody tripped on anything all night. Nitro was back after missing the summer.

Main event: Quake II free-for-all, q2dm1, frag limit 40. Sixteen people on The Edge is too many people on The Edge, and that's why we do it. TwoFrags won it the same way he won in March: by never once going for the railgun and letting everybody else fight over it. Slag was three behind at the end and has requested a rematch in writing.

Bluescreen's machine locked up twice during the map, and both times he came back in by typing kill at the console to "reset." Quake II counts that as a suicide, and a suicide costs you a frag. He knows that now.

After midnight: Team Fortress Classic on well, eight on eight. Red, 5 caps to 3. Lagmonster played medic the whole time and would like that noted. It's noted.

Main event: StarCraft: Brood War, 1-on-1, eight-player bracket. All games on Lost Temple, finals best of three. Kitfox came in having won both StarCraft brackets we'd ever held. She went out in the final. To be fair, it took three games and a carrier fleet.

Game 1 Kitfox, a zergling rush at about four minutes. Game 2 Zipdisk. Game 3 Zipdisk, carriers, after she'd taken half the map.

Cheeto played on his laptop, like he always does, with a network card that plugs into the side. It works. Don't ask him how long it took to make it work.

It was 105 at six o'clock. The garage faces west. We pushed the start back to 6 p.m. and ran three box fans and the garage door half up, and still five people stayed home, which nobody blamed them for. Two of the machines shut themselves off from the heat before ten.

Main event: Quake II, q2dm8, railguns only, frag limit 30. No mod, just an agreement: you pick up the railgun and nothing else. Anybody seen holding a rocket launcher had to sit out a minute. Slag never missed. It was unpleasant to watch.

Six people tied at two. October is going to be loud.

My one win is LAN #1, when there were six of us and I'd been practicing on the map for a week. I'm told this doesn't count. It's on the whiteboard, so it counts.
