the official page of nothing
the gallery

Six works of nothing. Four are photographs, printed by hand in my darkroom this year on eight-by-ten fiber paper. My scanner would have added something, so I've shown them here as closely as HTML allows.

A note for the technically minded: a negative with nothing on it is clear, and a clear negative prints solid black. A sheet of paper that sees no light at all comes out white. So nothing, it turns out, comes in both colors.

no. 1  ·  the inside of my lens cap, 1999
1/60 at f/8, lens cap on. printed 12 seconds at f/11.

no. 2  ·  blank, fourth attempt, 1999
a sheet of paper developed without being exposed. the first three had a speck of dust.

no. 3  ·  one minute in the darkroom with the lights off, 1999
sixty seconds, shutter open. it looks a great deal like no. 1. that is the point.

no. 4  ·  between frames 11 and 12, 1999
the thin strip of film between two pictures, enlarged as far as the enlarger goes.

 Subject:
 Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999

no. 5  ·  an e-mail from ohio, 1999
no subject, no message. the finest thing anyone has sent me. printed and framed.

no. 6  ·  the wall where the gallery would go, 1999
pale gray, because the real one is. a work in progress. nothing has been hung.

The prints are not for sale. There's nothing to sell.
