These are the three I used for sixteen months, cleaned up a little. Copy them into Notepad. The parts in square brackets are yours to fill in; take the brackets out when you do. Everything else can stay just as it is, though I'd be disappointed if you didn't change my colors to yours.

1. AN ENTRY

This goes on your front page, newest at the top. Each new entry goes above the last one.

<A NAME="[YYYYMMDD]"></A>
<H3>[Weekday], [Month] [Day],
[Year]</H3>

<P>[What happened. As long or
short as the day was.]</P>

<P>[More, if there is more.]</P>

<P><FONT SIZE="2">
<A HREF="#top">top</A></FONT></P>
<HR>

For the "top" link to work, put <A NAME="top"></A> right after your BODY tag. Filled in, the first two lines of an entry look like this:

<A NAME="19981126"></A>
<H3>Thursday, November 26, 1998</H3>

(That was Thanksgiving. It's one of the entries I'd most like to have back.)

2. A MONTH'S ARCHIVE PAGE

One of these for every month, named year first: 199811.html for November 1998. Paste the month's entries in where it says so, oldest first or newest first, whichever you've chosen.

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>[Journal name]:
[Month] [Year]</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY BGCOLOR="#F6EEDC"
 TEXT="#2A1A28" LINK="#7A2E6E">
<A NAME="top"></A>

<H2>[Month] [Year]</H2>

<P>
<A HREF="[YYYYMM].html">&lt;&lt;
[Month before]</A> |
<A HREF="index.html">Today</A> |
<A HREF="archives.html">All
months</A> |
<A HREF="[YYYYMM].html">[Month
after] &gt;&gt;</A>
</P>
<HR>

[The month's entries go here.]

<P>[The same four links
again.]</P>

</BODY>
</HTML>

The &lt;&lt; and &gt;&gt; make the little double arrows, << and >>. You can't type the pointy brackets straight into a page, because the browser thinks they're the start of a tag. Here are November 1998's links, filled in:

<A HREF="199810.html">&lt;&lt;
October 1998</A> |
<A HREF="index.html">Today</A> |
<A HREF="archives.html">All
months</A> |
<A HREF="199812.html">December
1998 &gt;&gt;</A>

The very first month has no month before, so leave that link off, and the newest archive's "month after" should point to index.html until there's a newer one. Remember: make and upload the archive page first, click every link on it, and only then take the entries off the front page.

3. A NOTIFY-LIST NOTE

Short. Your readers get a lot of mail. Your own address goes in To, and everyone on the list goes in Bcc, every time, no exceptions.

To:      [your own address]
Bcc:     [everyone on the list]
Subject: [Journal name] updated

New entry, [Weekday], [Month] [Day]:
[five or six words about it]

[your journal's address]

To leave this list, just reply
and say so.

Here's the last one I ever sent, more or less. The entry is gone now, but the note is still in my sent mail:

Subject: Differential updated

New entry, Sunday, March 14:
snow, my sister, and the cat.

To leave this list, just reply
and say so.

Don't send a note for every little fix, only for new entries. And never, ever add someone to the list who didn't ask to be on it.
