RONALD · 15 · Washington State
Draws with: a 0.5 mechanical pencil, Micron pens (the 05 for outlines, the 01 for everything else), and typing paper, because Bristol board costs money and I go through a lot of paper.
Favorite strip ever: Calvin and Hobbes. It ended on the last day of 1995, when I was eleven, and I'm still not over it. I have all the collections and I've read them until the spines broke.
What I'm good at: armor, rain, castles.
What I'm bad at: hands. Everybody in my panels has their hands in their pockets or behind a shield. Now you know why Sir Russell carries a shield.
Character I started: Sir Russell.
Someday: I want a strip in the newspaper. A real one, every day, for like thirty years.

NATALIE · 15 · Vermont
Draws with: a brush pen and a little bottle of India ink, plus watered-down ink for gray. My mom says the kitchen table is not a studio. The kitchen table is a studio.
Favorite strip ever: I love the really old Sunday comics my grandpa cut out of the paper when he was a kid. He kept them in a scrapbook and gave it to me last Christmas. The drawing in them is so loose and wild. Nobody draws like that anymore.
What I'm good at: animals, snow, motion lines.
What I'm bad at: I am not bad at anything. (Ronald says to put "straight lines.")
Character I started: the Cone. I drew one in the background of my first panel because there was a road, and the next week I put it in again as a joke to see if anybody noticed. Nobody did. So I kept going. By August it was a whole thing, and I can't stop now. It's in all twelve. I'm not stopping.
Someday: children's books, with my own pictures.

CLAYTON · 16 · Texas
Draws with: a regular blue ballpoint pen, on whatever's around. Notebook paper, the backs of my dad's work papers, the church bulletin (only during announcements).
Favorite strip ever: The Far Side. It ended in 1995 too. That was a bad year for comics. I like one-panel jokes best, which is funny, since I'm in a four-panel strip where I only get one panel. Maybe that's why I'm good at this.
What I'm good at: cowboys, cows, armadillos, endings.
What I'm bad at: spelling. (Thanks, Ronald.)
Characters I started: Mrs. McGinnis and Tiffany Wynne.
Someday: editorial cartoons for a big newspaper. I want to make a senator mad.
The jam was my idea, by the way. Just saying.

STEVEN · 15 · Ohio
Draws with: markers. Lots of markers. I save up for the good ones that blend, one or two at a time, and I have thirty-one now. I also get to use the scanner at my dad's office after five, when nobody's there, "if it's quick." It is never quick.
Favorite strip ever: I like animation better than strips. I want to work on cartoons, the kind on TV on Saturday mornings. I flip-book the corners of all my notebooks.
What I'm good at: big stuff, space, things that are way too big for the panel.
What I'm bad at: keeping things the same size. Ask Jerome.
Characters I started: Jerome (Natalie named him) and Ms. Horton (who I forgot about until she came back).
Someday: I'm going to draw the whole jam as a cartoon, with all four of us doing the voices. Natalie says she'll do the Cone.
