The luncheon is where you meet everybody. The interest groups are where you make your
friends. Every member can join as many groups as she wants (or he wants! Hi, husbands!). Each
group has a leader who keeps the list and sends reminders, so let the leader know if you're
coming, and then just show up. Nobody minds if you're a beginner at anything. Most of us were
beginners at being Southern, too.
Lunch Bunch Third Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. · Leader: Deloris Carillo |
| A different restaurant every month, somewhere you'd never find on your own. Deloris has lived here two years and found every good lunch spot within twenty miles. This month we're settling the barbecue question once and for all. (We won't.) |
Gourmet Dinner Club (couples) Every other month, Saturday night · Leaders: Amos and Carolyn Constantino |
| Groups of four couples take turns hosting dinner at home, with a theme and a menu planned ahead. The host couple does the main course and everybody else brings a course. Recent themes: Tuscany, a Texas Fiesta (I did the salsa), and a Low Country boil. October's is "A Southern Supper": fried chicken, collards, biscuits, and somebody has to attempt a pecan pie. New groups form every January. |
Book Group First Thursday, 7:30 p.m. · Leader: Sue McAleer |
| We read a book a month and talk about it over dessert at somebody's house. Sometimes we even talk about the book. September was Memoirs of a Geisha. October is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. November, in honor of our new home state, is Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, which is set in the North Carolina mountains during the Civil War. December is a paperback swap and a lot of cookies. |
Bunco First Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. · Leader: Lorraine Dumas |
| Twelve ladies, three tables, a lot of dice and a lot of noise. Bunco is a dice game that takes about two minutes to learn: each round has a number, you roll three dice trying to get that number, and if you roll all three, you yell "BUNCO!" and everybody groans. It's really an excuse to eat and laugh. $5 to play, prizes for most buncos, most wins, and most losses. We need subs, so get on Lorraine's list! |
Bridge Mondays, 12:30 p.m. · Leader: Mary Saunders |
| Friendly party bridge, not tournament bridge, at members' homes, two or three tables a week. All levels welcome. Mary, who moved here from Connecticut to be near her grandchildren, has played for fifty years and gives a beginners' lesson before the game if you ask her nicely. She is the most patient woman in North Carolina. |
Walkers Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. · Leader: Joann Horgan |
| Three miles on a greenway path along a creek, at a pace where you can still talk. Strollers welcome. In July and August we start at 7:30 because of the heat, and we have learned the meaning of the word "humid." Coffee afterward is optional but popular. |
Tennis Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 a.m. · Leader: Victoria Hatten |
| Doubles at the public courts in a park near the club area, beginner to advanced. Victoria matches players up by level, so nobody gets stuck across the net from a former college player (unless you want to be). |
Mom and Me Fridays, 10:00 a.m. · Leader: Sara Horn |
| A playgroup for moms with babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Parks, the library story time, the children's museum, and in October, the pumpkin patch. Moving with little ones is hard. This group is a lifesaver, and I'm told the kids like it too. |
Antiquing Fourth Wednesday · Leader: Sherry Chesley |
| We carpool to antique malls, little shops in the small towns around Charlotte, and the big monthly antique show at the expo center. Sherry knows her stuff, especially furniture and old quilts, and she'll tell you if that "antique" is from 1880 or 1980. |
Couples' Night Out First Friday, plus specials · Leaders: David and Rosemary Woods |
| Dinner out, bowling, a minor-league ball game, a comedy club, and the big Halloween costume party on Saturday, October 30. A good way for husbands to meet other husbands who also got dragged to North Carolina by somebody's job. (Wayne says to say "relocated." Fine. Relocated.) |
Day Trippers One Saturday a month · Leader: Janet Russell |
| Getting to know our new state, and the ones next door. We've been to Charleston, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, and an old textile mill town, and on Saturday, October 23, we're driving the Blue Ridge Parkway for the fall color. Carpools leave at 7:00 a.m. sharp. Janet has never waited for anybody and she isn't going to start. |
Crafty Hands Fourth Thursday, 7:00 p.m. · Leader: Judith Schwan |
| A different project every month: wreaths, stenciling, scrapbooks, Christmas ornaments. Judith brings the supplies and you chip in a few dollars. October is autumn door wreaths. No talent required. Ask me how I know. |
Want to start a group? We'd love it! A golf group and a supper club for singles have both
been suggested. Talk to Edna Perdue, our president, at any luncheon.
