MINIVAN SPICE
a Spice Girls page by a grown woman who is not sorry

GIRL POWER DID NOT END IN MAY 1998   ★   SCARY • SPORTY • BABY • POSH   ★   AND GOOD LUCK TO GINGER TOO

Hello and welcome. My name is Donna Kerrigan. I'm 38, I live outside Columbus, Ohio, I do the books for a heating and cooling company three days a week, and I drive a green minivan with a Spice Girls sticker on the back window that my daughter begs me to scrape off.

Here's how it happened. In the spring of 1997 my daughter Chelsea, who was ten, played "Wannabe" roughly four hundred times in the back seat on the way to swim practice. Somewhere around time number two hundred, I started to like it. By the time Spiceworld came out that November, I had a favorite Spice. By the time the movie came out, I was taking Chelsea and her friends, and I was the one who wanted to go.

Chelsea is twelve now. She has moved on to Britney Spears and a boy band I'm not allowed to have an opinion about. She says the Spice Girls are "for little kids." She also says I'm embarrassing, which, fair.

I'm still a fan. I was a fan when there were five, and I'm a fan now that there are four. This page is for the rest of us.

THE GIRLS: HER OPINION vs. MINE
(Chelsea helped with her column, in exchange for a ride to the mall.)

Spice Chelsea (12) says I say
Scary
Melanie Brown
"She's loud." She's loud and I love it. Got married last September, had a baby girl in February, and did a hit record with Missy Elliott. Busy lady.
Sporty
Melanie Chisholm
"She was always my favorite, don't tell anyone." The real singer of the group, and I will fight about it. The duet with Bryan Adams was lovely. I read she has her own album coming this fall.
Baby
Emma Bunton
"Pigtails are for babies." The sweetheart. You can't dislike her. I have tried, to annoy Chelsea, and I couldn't.
Posh
Victoria Adams, now Beckham
"She never smiles." A baby boy in March and a wedding on the Fourth of July, in Ireland, with a soccer star. Of course she didn't smile. She had a lot on her mind.
Ginger
Geri Halliwell
"She left, so who cares." See below. I have feelings.

ABOUT GERI

I remember exactly where I was when I heard Geri had left. It was the end of May 1998 and I was in the kitchen with the radio on, and I said "Oh, no" out loud to nobody. Chelsea cried. I didn't, but I thought about it.

I've had over a year to think it over and here is where I've come out: people are allowed to leave things. I've left a job or two. She'd been going nonstop for years, and when you're that tired you make a decision and then you live with it. I'm not mad at her. She's become a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, and her own album came out this summer. I bought it. I like "Mi Chico Latino" better than I thought I would.

But I'll tell you what I really respect: the other four kept going. They finished the tour. They put out "Goodbye" for Christmas, a gentle song about someone moving on, and from everything I've seen they've been gracious about it. That's class. That's what I want Chelsea to learn from all this, if she learns anything from it at all.

MY TOP SIX SONGS
  1. Say You'll Be There - The best one, start to finish. Great to do dishes to.
  2. Viva Forever - The pretty, sad one. The video with the little puppet fairies has all five of them, and I get a lump in my throat every time.
  3. 2 Become 1 - Chelsea used to skip it. I didn't.
  4. Stop - Sixties sound, lots of fun. We all learned the hand moves.
  5. Goodbye - See above.
  6. Wannabe - The one that started it all in my back seat. It would be rude to leave it off.

THE CONCERT

Summer of 1998, just the two of us, a two-hour drive each way. It was the tour after Geri left, and there were a few girls in ginger wigs in the crowd holding up signs for her, which I thought was sweet. Chelsea wore platform sneakers and a Union Jack T-shirt. I wore my sensible shoes and a Union Jack T-shirt. We both screamed. Chelsea claims she doesn't remember it. I have a stack of photos from the drugstore that say otherwise, and I'd put them up here if my brother-in-law ever gave back our scanner.

WHAT'S YOUR SPICE NAME?

Mine is Minivan Spice, obviously. Some of the ones readers have sent in: Carpool Spice (Linda in Kentucky), Night Shift Spice (a nurse in Phoenix), Grandma Spice (Evelyn, who is 67 and has the lunchbox), Tax Season Spice (my sister-in-law), and Soccer Mom Spice (at least nine of you). E-mail me yours and I'll add it to the list.

New! What's next? The four of them are said to be working on a new album, and there's the Sporty record this fall. I'll post news here when I have it. Chelsea says nobody will care. We'll see.

The Spice Girls, their songs and pictures belong to them and to Virgin Records. I own a minivan and a lot of CDs.
