 everybody's ryan stories

[ ryan ]   [ everybody's ryan stories ]   [ write me ]

people started e-mailing me these after the benefit, and some of them people just told me at shows and i wrote them down on my hand. i typed them up the way they came. if you want yours changed or taken off, tell me. if you want to add one, write me. - sean

i still have one of his inhalers in the glove box of my van. it's been there since like 1997 because he left so many in there i started keeping a spare for him. i'm not taking it out. if you ride in my van don't touch it.

- daryl (drums, snow emergency)

when i joined the band i couldn't play bass at all and ryan said don't worry nobody listens to the bass anyway. then at our third show he walked over in the middle of "dad's cutlass" and yelled BASS SOLO and pointed at me and i had to do one. i played the same two notes for like a minute. he stood there nodding like it was the greatest thing he ever heard. after that we did it every show.

- gordo (bass, snow emergency)

we had a show in kalamazoo and no gas money. ryan gave me forty bucks out of his car wash tips. i tried to pay him back like four times and he wouldn't take it. he said give it to the next band. so i'm giving forty bucks to the next band. whoever you are.

- dennis (the pinholes)

i interviewed ryan for issue 3 of my zine. i was supposed to ask him about the band. instead he talked for like an hour about the public library and how it's the most punk thing in america because it's free and anybody can go in and nobody can stop you. i printed the whole thing. it was the longest interview i ever ran. people still ask me for that issue. i made more copies for the benefit.

- tanya (t.) (photocopy heart zine)

the first show i ever went to i was thirteen and i got knocked down in the pit and ryan jumped off his chair and picked me up and asked if i was ok and then he gave me a copy of the tape for free and said come back next month. i did. i've been to every vfw show since. i'm fifteen now. i'm starting a band. it's going to be loud. thanks ryan.

- ross (no band yet)

a lot of guys in the scene talk through the girl bands, or go outside to smoke. ryan was always front row for us, every single time, yelling along to our songs even when he didn't know the words. one time some guy was yelling stuff at us during our set and ryan just went and stood next to him, very close, with his arms folded, and didn't say anything. the guy left. ryan came back and kept dancing.

- ginny (canned ham)

my mom took her car to the car wash last winter and when she got home there was NINE VOLT RULES written in the salt on the back window, very neatly, in letters about six inches high. she didn't know who did it. i knew. she made me wash it off. i didn't.

- char (nine volt)

I do sound at the VFW most months. In two years Ryan was the only singer who ever stayed after to help me wrap the cables. Every show. He did it the right way too, over-under, so they don't kink. I asked him once who taught him that and he said nobody, he just watched me. The night of the benefit I wrapped them by myself and it took a really long time.

- Allan (sound, vfw shows)

i worked the car wash with ryan for a year. he sang the entire shift. drying cars, vacuuming, whatever, singing. not even his own songs, like old country songs his grandpa liked, and show tunes. customers would ask who was singing and i'd point at him and they'd tip him extra. the manager put a little sign up after he died, by the towels. it just says RYAN. nobody's taken it down.

- eva (car wash, and i play keyboard in nobody yet)

the big snow in january, school was closed, the radio kept saying snow emergency, and ryan called everybody at seven in the morning to say the radio was playing our band name all day and that we were famous now. then he came over and shoveled out my whole driveway and my neighbor's, wheezing the whole time, and wouldn't come inside until he was done. then he used his inhaler and ate all our cereal.

- jose (plaid weather)
