Nine shows, May to August, Virginia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. I'm not going to try
to give you set lists. I didn't write them down (Natasha did, on her arm, and then she went
swimming), and you can trade for the tapes and hear for yourself. This is just where I was and
one thing I'll remember about each one.

When & where |
The one-liner |
| 1 |
Thursday, May 20 Philadelphia, PA a football stadium |
My first stadium show ever. The band looked about two inches tall from where we were, and I could
not have cared less. |
| 2 |
Friday, May 21 Philadelphia, PA same stadium |
Natasha lost her voice by the encore and spent the whole drive back to the motel communicating in
hand signals. |
| 3 |
Saturday, May 22 Philadelphia, PA same stadium, third night |
Three nights in a row and no two shows alike. If anybody ever asks you why people go more than once,
that's the whole answer. |
| 4 |
Friday, June 4 Burgettstown, PA an amphitheater in the hills west of Pittsburgh |
First lawn of the summer. That hill is steep. Wear shoes with some grip, or plan on arriving at the
front faster than you meant to. |
| 5 |
Saturday, June 5 Virginia Beach, VA an amphitheater near the beach |
We drove all night from Pennsylvania and napped on the sand all afternoon. And this was the night
they played our song. Natasha and I just held on to each other and screamed. Worth every mile. |
| 6 |
Friday, July 30 Charlotte, NC an amphitheater |
Hot. Not warm. Hot. It was still hot at midnight. We split a gallon jug of water and I'd have
fought a bear for a second one. |
| 7 |
Saturday, July 31 Raleigh, NC an amphitheater |
The Sunburn. I put on sunscreen at noon and then forgot I had a body until about ten o'clock. Pictures
will be posted never. |
| 8 |
Sunday, August 1 Bristow, VA an amphitheater out in the country past Manassas |
Three shows in three nights. We sang the whole two hours it took to get out of the parking lot,
then I slept the whole way home with my head on the window. |
| 9 |
Wednesday, August 4 Hershey, PA the stadium by the amusement park |
The last one of my summer, and the whole town smells like chocolate. I cried a little in the parking
lot afterward. Natasha says it was a lot. |
THE SUMMER BY THE NUMBERS
Shows: 9 · States: 3 · Miles on the Civic: about 2,600
Nights on the lawn: 5 · Nights in a stadium: 4
T-shirts bought: 2 (Natasha: 4)
Sunburns: 1, but it counts as three
Shows Natasha came to: 7 of 9 (she had to work the Charlotte and Raleigh weekend, so my cousin
rode down with me instead, and Natasha met us in Bristow on Sunday)
|
Not on the list: Woodstock. The band played there the Saturday in July, and people
asked if I went. I didn't, and after reading about how that weekend ended, I'm glad I spent the
gas money on Charlotte instead.
Coming this fall: Nothing for me, I'm afraid. I'm back in class and back to
being broke. But if they come anywhere near you, go, and bring somebody who's never been.
Then e-mail me and tell me everything.
