The B-Sides Want List
and my trading rules

back to the piano bench

Tori puts songs on her singles that aren't on the albums, and some of them are as good as anything she's ever done. A few of the singles only came out in England, so tracking them all down is half the fun and most of my grocery money. Here's where my collection stands.

Y Kant Tori Read, the 1988 album, on anything: record, tape, CD, a tape of a tape of a tape  WANT WANT WANT

Favorites among what I have, if you're new to the B-sides and want to know where to start: Upside Down, Take to the Sky, Honey, Sugar (which she still plays live), and Cooling, which I think is the most beautiful thing on this page. I don't know why some of these didn't make the albums. I've decided that's her business.

Trading rules

1. I trade tapes, I don't sell them. Never. If anybody ever tries to sell you a dub of a B-side for money, don't. And buy her actual records. She earned it.

2. Blank for blank. Send me good blank tapes and return postage and I'll send them back full. If you've got something on my WANT list, I'll make your tapes for free and pay the postage too.

3. Good tapes only. TDK SA90s or Maxell XLIIs, or something just as good. Nothing from the grocery store checkout lane. They stretch.

4. Tell me what generation it is. If your copy is a tape of a tape of a tape, say so. I'll say so on mine too. I write everything on the J-card.

5. Pack them right. Padded envelope, cases taped shut, nothing loose.

6. Be patient in December and April. Those are juries. I will not be dubbing anything. I'll be in Room 14 with Brahms.

7. Real CD singles too. I'll trade my spare Crucify (I have two) toward any of the English singles above, or pay what's fair.

Write to me at [email protected] with what you have and what you want, and tell me your favorite song while you're at it. I always want to know.
