Four athletes. One couch. Here's who they are, how they trained and what they eat. Stats are self-reported, except for Dean's, which I checked.
DUSTIN
OVERALL CHAMPION · 2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze
Age: 12
Represents: The Nation of the Hall Closet
Event specialty: Freestyle Snack Stacking
Favorite snack: Chocolate sandwich cookies (stacked, then eaten)
Favorite show: Pokémon
Training: Seventh grade
Personal best: 27 cookies, vertical
Coach's notes: My little brother. Mom dropped him off Saturday morning and said, "Do not let him eat only snacks." We did not let him eat only snacks. We also let him eat pizza. He came in as the youngest athlete and nobody took him seriously, which was everybody's mistake. He has a natural low center of gravity for the couch and he can fall asleep anywhere, including once at a Giants game in the seventh inning with people yelling. He wants to defend his title next year. He has already started stacking at home, and Mom has called me about it twice.
Dustin says: "Ricky is going to be so mad when he reads this. I won. I won. I won."

RICKY
FOUNDER · 2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze
Age: 19
Represents: The Bedroom With the Good Window
Event specialty: Synchronized Napping
Favorite snack: Cheese puffs, which I now know are not built for stacking
Favorite show: The Simpsons, and I'm still sad they stopped making new Mystery Science Theater 3000 this summer
Training: Nineteen years of it
Personal best: Asleep in under four minutes (Econ 1A, last spring)
About me: Class Clown, Class of '98. Full-time at the community college, major undecided (I'm leaning toward communications, because I like to communicate). I work weekends at a video store, which is basically professional training for this. I came up with the Couch Potato Olympics at 3 a.m. in August, and I thought it was a joke, and then I wrote the rules on a pizza box, and then it was real. I'm proud of everything we did, except losing to a twelve-year-old.
Ricky says: "The tile was wet."

KENNY
2 gold, 2 silver
Age: 20
Represents: The Bedroom Next to the Bathroom
Event specialty: The Commercial Break Fridge Dash
Favorite snack: Tortilla chips and bean dip, structural or otherwise
Favorite show: Friends
Training: Delivers pizza four nights a week
Personal best: 7.9 seconds, fridge and back, with a soda, unshaken
Coach's notes: Kenny and I have been friends since fifth grade, when we both got sent to the office for the same joke on the same day in different classrooms. Kenny is the fastest man in Apartment 14 by a lot. He is also the owner of Tater, our silver medalist cat, and the brand-new beanbag that is the centerpiece of the Fresno 2000 bid. Kenny's only weakness is the Weather Channel. It's the music. It gets him every time.
Kenny says: "I wasn't asleep. I was resting my eyes in a competitive way."

DEAN
WORLD RECORD HOLDER · 1 gold, 1 silver · 1 disqualification
Age: 21
Represents: The Bedroom With the Weird Smell (he says it's the carpet)
Event specialty: The Channel-Surfing Marathon
Favorite snack: Saltines (we've talked to him about it)
Favorite show: SportsCenter, all of them, back to back
Training: Has had his thumb on a remote since 1983
Personal best: 61 channels, there and back, 2 minutes 47 seconds. WORLD RECORD.
Coach's notes: The most talented thumb in Fresno. Dean grew up in a house with a TV in every room, and it shows. His channel-surfing run on Sunday night was the greatest athletic thing I've ever seen in person, and I have been to the demolition derby at the fair three years running. Then on Monday he threw it all away for four cans of soda. He says he has learned from it. He also says he wants a rematch in napping, but he has to apologize to the cat first, and Tater is not ready to hear it.
Dean says: "One of them was root beer."

HONORARY ATHLETE: TATER
Kenny's cat. Age 6. Silver medal, Synchronized Napping. Specialty: the sunny spot on the carpet, where she naps sixteen hours a day without a single can of soda. Favorite channel: Animal Planet, which she watches very closely when there are birds. She was never told she was competing. She won anyway. Tater is the real champion of these Games, and we all know it, but she doesn't care, because she is a cat.
