UNIT NOTES: GDI AND NOD
APPENDIX TO: Tiberian Sun: Two Weeks In
[ BACK TO THE FIELD REPORT ] [ GDI ] [ NOD ]

What every unit and defense I've used is for, and what I think of it after two weeks. No exact numbers. I don't have them, and anybody quoting you exact numbers in week two is guessing. These are notes from about sixteen online games and most of the GDI campaign.

Both sides also get the basics: Light Infantry, Engineers (they capture enemy buildings, which is the whole engineer rush problem), Harvesters, and the MCV that unpacks into your Construction Yard.

>> GDI
UNIT WHAT IT IS MY NOTES
Disc ThrowerInfantry that lobs exploding discsWrecks infantry in groups and hurts buildings. The best infantry in the game. Three of them at home stop most engineer rushes.
MedicHeals infantryPut one or two behind your Disc Throwers and they last twice as long.
Jump Jet InfantryInfantry that fliesFun, and great for going over walls. Anything that shoots at aircraft shoots at them too, so don't fly them over SAM Sites.
WolverineSmall, fast walker with machine gunsEats infantry. Paper armor, so keep it away from anything with a real gun.
TitanGDI's main battle walker, big cannonThe backbone. Build lots. Babysit their pathfinding.
Amphibious APCCarries infantry, crosses waterGDI's answer to "how do I get Engineers over there." Water maps only, mostly.
DisruptorSonic beam that hits everything in a lineEVERYTHING in a line, including your own guys. Strong. Park it where your army isn't standing in front of it.
Mammoth Mk. IIGiant four-legged walkerHuge, slow, expensive, and it can shoot at aircraft too. If one shows up and you don't have a plan, you lose. Ask me how I know.
Orca FighterFast attack aircraft with missilesHit and run. Flies home to the Helipad to reload. My favorite harvester hunter on GDI.
Orca BomberHeavy bomberSlow, hits hard, dies to SAMs. Later in the game when they're busy elsewhere.
Component TowerDefense tower you finish with an add-onVulcan for infantry, RPG for vehicles, SAM for aircraft. I mix all three around the Refinery.
Firestorm GeneratorPowers an energy wall around your baseNothing gets through while it's on. It can't stay on forever. Turtle players love it. I hate playing against it.
Ion CannonThe superweaponSame as the first game: the sky opens and something stops existing. Most of my games are over before it's ready.

>> NOD
UNIT WHAT IT IS MY NOTES
CyborgHalf man, half machine gunTough, and Tiberium doesn't hurt it, so it can fight in the fields where your normal infantry would melt.
Cyborg CommandoBig cyborg with a plasma cannonScary on paper. Haven't seen enough of him yet to say more.
Attack BuggyFast car with a machine gunFor running down infantry and scouting. Don't let it near tanks.
Attack CycleMotorcycle with rocketsFastest thing I've seen on the ground. Born to kill harvesters. Send four, lose two, cost them a fortune.
Tick TankLight tank that can dig itself inDeployed, it turns into a little bunker with a gun and gets a lot tougher. Dug in at a bridge, it's a wall.
ArtilleryLong-range gun that deploys to fireOut-ranges almost everything once it's set up. Helpless up close. Always behind something.
Stealth TankRocket tank you can't seeCloaked until it fires. Perfect for hitting harvesters and leaving.
Subterranean APCCarries infantry undergroundDrives under the map and comes up wherever it wants. With a load of Engineers inside, it's the most annoying thing in the game. Respect it.
Devil's TongueFlame tank that travels undergroundPops up in the middle of your infantry and cooks them. Mean.
BansheeFast attack aircraftQuick strikes on power plants. Knock out the power and the whole base sits there blinking.
Obelisk of LightGiant laser towerStill the scariest building in Command & Conquer. Needs a lot of power. Kill the power and it's a statue.
Laser TurretSmaller laser defenseCheaper than the Obelisk. A couple by the Refinery keep the cheap stuff out.
SAM SiteAnti-aircraftBuild them before the Orcas come, not after.
Stealth GeneratorCloaks everything around itHides your base. GDI has to come find you. Very Nod.

The short version: GDI is armor and firepower. Nod is speed, stealth and tunnels. GDI wants a straight fight. Nod wants to be somewhere else when the fight starts.
