Can you save Aeris?
No. I'm sorry. I know. I have gotten more e-mail about this than everything else put together. There is no secret item, no code, no way to bring her back by beating Ruby Weapon or leveling her up to 99 or anything else you've heard at school. What happens at the end of disc one is part of the story and it happens every time. I cried too. I still do.
My advice: take her materia off before that part, because it goes with her if you don't.
How do I get Knights of the Round?
You need a Gold Chocobo. Knights of the Round is in a cave on a little island way up in the northeast corner of the world map, and the only way to get there is on a Gold Chocobo, because it's the only one that can cross the ocean.
Getting a Gold Chocobo is a long project. The short version:
- Rent stables at the Chocobo Farm and use the Chocobo Lure materia to catch good chocobos. Feed them good greens, like Sylkis Greens.
- Race them at the Gold Saucer to make them better.
- Breed a Great and a Good chocobo to get a Blue or a Green one.
- Breed a Blue and a Green together with a Carob Nut to get a Black one. You get Carob Nuts from the Vlakorados near Bone Village.
- Breed a Black one with a Wonderful one and a Zeio Nut to get a Gold. Zeio Nuts come from the Goblins on Goblin Island.
It took me two weekends. It was worth it. Knights of the Round is thirteen knights hitting one after another and it goes on so long you can go get a snack.
What's the W-Item trick?
The W-Item materia lets you use two items in one turn. On my PlayStation copy there's a trick with it: in a fight, you pick W-Item and choose the item you want more of, then keep selecting another item and cancelling out of it. If you do it right, the count of the first item goes up each time. People use it to get 99 Elixirs. Practice with Potions first, because if you mess it up you just use the item. I think it's a little bit cheating, so I only did it once, to see if it worked. (It worked.)
Where are Yuffie and Vincent?
Yuffie is a random battle in forest areas once you're out of Midgar and on your way. She's a ninja who looks like a normal enemy. After you beat her, talk to her, and be careful with your answers, because she's touchy and she'll run off if you say the wrong thing. Later, if you go to her hometown of Wutai, she'll steal your materia. Just go with it.
Vincent is asleep in a coffin in the basement of the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim. You need the key from the safe upstairs. The clues to open it are in notes around the mansion, and there's a boss inside the safe, so be ready. Then go down the spiral stairs, find the coffin, and talk to him. Twice.
Have you beaten Emerald and Ruby Weapon?
No! I've tried! Emerald Weapon is under the sea and you fight it from the submarine. There's a time limit down there unless you equip the Underwater materia. Ruby Weapon is in the desert around the Gold Saucer. My friend beat Ruby and says the trick is to go into the fight with only one person still standing, which sounds crazy, and which I've never managed. If you've beaten them, please write, and I'll put your advice up here with your name.
Favorite materia combos
- Final Attack + Phoenix — if everyone dies, Phoenix comes out and brings you back. Saved my life a dozen times.
- Knights of the Round + Mime — summon it once, then everybody else Mimes it. No more MP.
- Added Effect + Hades in your armor protects you from a bunch of status problems.
- All + Restore — boring but important. Heal the whole party.
- Cover on Cloud or Barret so they jump in front of weaker characters.
And the Omnislash question
Omnislash is Cloud's last Limit Break. You buy it with Battle Points at the Battle Square in the Gold Saucer. It costs a lot at first and gets cheaper later in the game, so if you're not in a hurry, wait.
