My Endgame Party
the five who finally beat the game for me

Jobs Job Tree My Party

The last battles of Final Fantasy Tactics are hard, and the last few come one right after another, so whatever you walk in with is what you have. My first time through, I got near the end with a party that was good at the middle of the game and bad at the end of it, and I had to go back to an old save and spend a week of evenings fixing it. This is the party I fixed it with, and the same five beat it again the second time.

Three are story characters: Ramza, who you have to bring, Agrias and Orlandu. Two are my own units, who started out as nobodies and became the most important people on the team. I named them myself, after my two best friends, who think that's either an honor or very strange.

 Ramza Our hero
JobMonk
ActionPunch Art
Second actionGuts
ReactionHamedo
SupportAttack UP
MovementMove+2
Ramza has his own special Squire command, Guts, which nobody else gets, so I keep it as his second action. It has Yell, for giving an ally more Speed, and a few other tricks. As a Monk he hits harder than almost anybody and heals himself with Chakra. Hamedo hits the enemy before the enemy's attack lands, which is very satisfying to watch.

 Agrias Holy Knight
JobHoly Knight
ActionHoly Sword
Second actionItem
ReactionBlade Grasp
SupportConcentrate
MovementMove+1
My favorite character in the game, and not only because she's the best knight in it. Her Holy Sword skills hit from a distance. Item as her second action means she can throw a Phoenix Down in an emergency. Blade Grasp catches sword attacks, and her Brave is high enough that it goes off a lot.

 Orlandu Sword Saint
JobSword Saint
ActionAll Swordskill
Second actionPunch Art
ReactionCounter
SupportAttack UP
MovementMove+1
He joins very late, in Chapter 4, and he's so strong it almost doesn't seem fair. His command has the sword skills of several other characters all in one, and he arrives carrying Excalibur, which keeps him Hasted. I gave him Punch Art so he can heal himself with Chakra. The translation calls him by more than one name, which confused me for most of a chapter.

 Brandy My Calculator
JobCalculator
ActionMath Skill
Second actionItem
ReactionAuto Potion
SupportMagic AttackUP
MovementTeleport
My own unit, from the very first group you start with, and the reason I wrote this whole page. She spent most of the game going up the Chemist side to unlock Calculator, learning White, Black and Time Magic on the way. Now, with the right number, she can cast Haste on every one of us and none of them, all at once, for free, before anybody else has moved. You have to know your units' levels and heights and look at the map carefully before you pick the number, because Math Skill hits enemies and allies alike. I keep a sheet of paper next to the TV.

 Sergio My Samurai
JobSamurai
ActionDraw Out
Second actionJump
ReactionBlade Grasp
SupportTwo Hands
MovementIgnore Height
My other unit, recruited in Chapter 2. He went the long way through Knight, Monk and Lancer to unlock Samurai, so he has a lot of abilities to choose from. Draw Out hits a whole area for no MP, as long as I have the katanas, and Two Hands makes his regular attack enormous. Jump is for when an enemy archer is standing somewhere I can't walk to. Ignore Height is for the same reason.

Why These Five

Three people who hit very hard up close, one who hits a whole area, and one who can change the whole battle on the first turn. Healing comes from Chakra, items and Brandy's spells, so nobody has to be a full-time healer. I'm sure there are better parties. People on the newsgroups post new ones every week, and some of them are very clever. But this is the one that worked for me, and I understand every choice in it, which I think is the point of the job system in the first place.

Allen watched me beat the last battle the second time. He says he's going to start over. I'll believe it when I see it.
